WTB: AirSoft Assault Rifle(s)
I am looking for a couple of Airsoft guns for a halloween costume.
More specifically The guns that Jayne Cobb uses in various epsisodes of Firefly and Serenity.
Like this:
http://www.toyarsenal.com/Merchant2/mer ... 00ELECTRIC
and this:
http://www.toyarsenal.com/Merchant2/mer ... y_Code=530
and a pistol.
BUT, since they are going to be modified They don't have to be exactly those guns. Operational or not operational, doesn't matter since all I am looking for is the look.
Also consider other type of "toy" guns that look like those.
Thanks in advance.

Check your local swap meets. They often have lots of airsoft rifles for about $20.

I'm no expert on Firefly, but I think the HK G-36 that you showed is not the correct weapon. It looked to me, from watching Serenity, that Jaynes had 2 variants of the HK MP5. One was a rifle and one was a submachinegun.
The submachine gun looks like this:

And the rifle looks like this:

Of course, they have rails racks scopes and whatnot all over them but those are the basic guns.
Check e-bay?

I located a illustration of "Vera" from a fan sight. It apparently is an illustration for a book and was drawn from the actual prop on the show.
After seeing the Illustration It really doesn't look like ANY gun I have ever seen in real life. However, I do think the G36C comes fairly close. I will have to make some pretty heavy mods to it, but oh well.

Okay...looks like you are on the right track then. Look at airsoft on e-bay?

Irish, I've got an airsoft MP5K I'd be willing to part with- it's a spring-powered cock-and-shoot model so not worth much for airsoft games, but it looks the part. It's a little longer than the genuine article because it uses the front pistol grip as the cocking handle, shotgun style. I also have a spring-powered S&W 9mm auto pistol that might be worth your while.
E-mail me off-list at redbarbarian(at)comcast.net if interested; I'll send you photos and you can make an offer.

Hey Irish, Vera has an AK body...

It's not the body that counts, it's the rate of fire.

Just an FYI on the guns

The MP5 is a submachine gun, it is not a battle rifle.
There are various different versions of the MP5:
Example: MP5K

MP5A3

MP5SD

The G36/K/C is an assault rifle and looks like this

Difference, the subgun uses a pistol cartridge and the assualt rifle uses a rifle cartridge.
The prop in that TV show is neither.

SOT- so what's your point? It's science fiction. Tim already covered what kinds of guns the props were based on, but regardless, I don't imagine the film's designers gave much of a rat's ass about the ballistics involved. If you want to get technical, we could argue how silly it is for characters 500 years in the future to be porting both late 19th and late 20th century firearms.
Irish- just located the toys and took photos, will send to you in the AM. Bedtime now. Getting cranky.

I watched Aliens with a friend when it came out and he laughed when he saw wasshisname with a pump shotgun.
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." was his response.

That didn't bug me so much as the fact that the Marines of the future had reverted to Vietnam-era jungle boots and steel helmets with camo-painted hockey pads added on...

They had shotguns in OUTLAND too, but at least they took the trouble to add infrared sights to them. Still, Connery's gun was an 1890's type pump, IIRC.
While one could argue that ballistic weapons might have their place in a futuristic setting, it seems to me that they would be constructed from polymer and ceramics, be very light (using some sort of recoil compensation to counter lack of mass), incorporate a heads-up display targeting system (possibly an ocular implant), and use caseless ammo. Oh yeah---perhaps silenced and flash elimination would be other aspects. And the weapons might only be able to be fired by authorized individuals via a biometrics identification system.
-------
Irish: Dude, you gotta share some photos when you get it all together, okay? Sounds like a hoot!
I miss having a SCiFi theme event to make a costume for. The last was a Halloween party where the hosts turned their hous into the vintage Disneyland ride Monsanto's Journey to Inner Space. It was hokey but fun.

Because we build the guns, and the guns are NOT based on the ones quoted.
Just trying to explain the differences.
The MP5 is a subgun and had nothing to do with the prop in question.
The G36 is a rifle and had very little if nothing to do with the prop gun.
Short version for the slower:
No the MP5 was not part of the design for the prop gun.
If anything it was the Saiga shotgun and Akban.

SOT_II,
Maybe I can help you with your confusion on the discussion:
I wrote that the MP5-K (or some variant) is the subgun Jayne wears on his chest. And one of the rifles shown in the movie (wielded by Jayne?) is based on an MP5; the characteristic solid stock with it's semi-spherical join to the receiver is clearly visible. Those were my points.
Then Irish directed the discussion towards a gun not seen in the film but rather in the series, Jayne's "Vera". But he mentioned he ALSO wanted the gun Jayne wears on his chest, the MP5-K.
...does this help?

Yeah, I think there is some confusion here.
What I am looking for is actually 3 guns not 1.
I am looking for an MP5K that Jayne wears on his chest.
I am looking for a semi automatic handgun that Jayne wears on his hip.
I am looking for a gun that can be modified fairly easily to look something like "Vera" jaynes pride and joy gun.
Also Jayne uses a G-36 type gun in the Movie:
"Vera" I have come to realize is based on an AK-47 body. However It would require alot more work to mod the AK body to look like Vera than I am willing to put into it. So, I will mod the G-36 body to make a "space age" gun to get the effect.

I don't care how you modify the damn things Aidan, we STILL are not going to let you bring them on the list field
