wanted: beginner helms that aren't ugly spundomes (SCA)

Post by Morgan »

I've got a young man in my local group who's looking for a helm. He's interested in something that's nicer than the $100 spun dome generi-monstrosity, but he's only looking to spend say 150-225. Who's making decently nice helms in this range right now?

Please provide links and I'll pass them along to the young man and we'll go from there. Thanks!

I'd prefer to know "in stock", "Can have it shortly" or "my waiting line is X months long."

PM, IM, Email, respond...whatever.

Check the basic bascient & great helms. Less than $125 for a 14ga period style helm in mild steel.

I have not used this armory so I can not vouch for them.

BTW Good for him to not desire to go with an ugly spundome. I hope he continues to have the taste to get matching armour for his new helm. I love when the newbies want more than mediocre it gives me hope. :)

Thanks for that suggestion, Paul. I'll show him, but I think he was hoping for something open faced... he wants to do combat archery and wants the best full visability. Should have specified. But it's a great suggestion for others who may read this.

I've owned an illusions basic bascinet. I'll grant that it's better than an ashcraft baker spundome in terms of looks. I don't personally like the lines, but I'll put it on my list.

Have him check out Clay Moore also. On ebay he is known as the templer knight. He is Lewis Moores Brother and is working out of his brothers shop.

Here is is EBAY info...

I bought a klappvisor bascient from him and it looks just like Lewis's work but with a longer face plate.

I haven't fought in yet (adding vervailles, maile, blueing, a liner, ect.) fifirst. But I have taken a hit it sucessfully. I got it for under $200. I paid for the hinge from Revival on top of that but it was installed @ no aadditional cost with the latch featured in TOMAR. You can see it here: http://photobucket.com/albums/v95/Magnu ... 0Bascinet/

I am VERY VERY happy with what I got and feel that he could have charged much more. The vison is pretty good. Not the same a a bar grill but not too far from it. I'm sure he could make a bargrilled one also, or have him make both with removeable hinges.

Sorry I don't. I have seen some of Lewis's gauntlets in person though and used them and they were fine. They were a diffrent design though.
