Is it just for aluminium scales?
If I am building this it will be for a possible LH group, so I dont want to use something that is very not-period.
Though, I am not sure what they would be made out of? would mild work? Brass or bronze? what would Byzantine era lamellar scales be made from?

Here are the hard facts they will never know that it is aluminum unless you tell them. With that said I applaude you for your historical passion as I have many of the same standards. Ask yourself this how period are the steel composition used today compared to that of a Byzantine soldier. Point being if you are going to go for it then go for it and take no short cuts. Good luck let me know if I can help as I am always looking for ways to improve our passion/hobby.
