Camp Furnishings

Post by Gwydion Caithnes »

Anyone got a good source for stuff that looks even remotely period? Tried clicking on Armourer Eric's link, but it didn't work.

I know Panther has some stuff (having just dropped a bundle one of their tents...), but has anyone got another source(s)?

Some basic chairs/stools, small tables, perhaps even an armour chest, or something that can be used to "hide" coolers (aside from draping fabrics on them) and perhaps double as a bench. Camp basics - nothing terribly fancy or ornate, but easily transportable.

I'm not necessarily looking to "commission" anything specific - just looking for any general sites that might exist from woodworkers who do this kind of thing, and might have a piece or two in stock, or can craft relatively quickly.

Gee, I'm not asking for too much, eh...

Most SCA "Camp furniture", I really don't like - it's not even vaguely period, but this guy does spiffy work:

I haven't shipped anything large enough to matter, I get the feeling that the shipping maked most furniture cost prohibitve. I have made quite a few things for the camp. But shipping them is another matter. If you like drop me a PM and we can discuss.

Here is a link to some of my work.

Here are are list of places to buy.

And here are ideas and plans to make.

These lists are by no means exaustive but do make a starting point.

Good luck

Gwydion,

shoot me an email with what you're looking for.... I dabble a little

If you're looking for functional and period looking I can help you out... but I will warn you I suck at finishing projects so I'll cut it all out and get is ready to assemble so all you need to do is stain, seal & put together.

Gives us another reason to get together one of these days!

It's a HELL of a lot easier/cheaper to ship "kits". Tab A slot B type stuff.

Chests especially work best this way. Send a bag of nails along, and finishing instructions. (If you can fuxor up with a can of Minwax, you shouldn't be using furniture anyway. :) )

One suggestion.. PLEASE don't fall into the "well, it LOOKS okay" mentality with any of the dumbass knock-down plywood chairs, or the "duke-a-lounger" someone made out of plywood. (While I respect it as ingenuity, I think it looks like ragged ass in an encampment).

If you are going to shoot the wad and get furniture, get _REAL_ furniture. Triangle stools don't take up much more space than a collapsed mortise and tenon thronelike plywood eyesore, and are a HELL of a lot easier to get into the tent when it starts to rain all sudden like.

(Says the guy with 8K worth of woodworking tools, and collapsible Wal-mart bag chairs!)

Sorry, it's something I'm setting up for future use, when I went full time last October I erroneously felt that I needed to add non-armour products to supplement my income, I did make 6 wood campboxes that I sell for $65 that was the first item I planned for that page. I am working on a bed design right now in what little free time I have.

If any of you are making your own medieval chests or furniture, we have handmade historically accurate handles and hinges in stock. You can get to them here:

Historic Enterprises Camp Gear

We also have a cool wagon and wheelbarrow, just out. Some assembly required

Yeah, I saw that, Jeff - nice expansion to the site, not to mention the product line. Expect an wheelbarrow order within the year - once I get my arm back in shape and start fighting again. Hey, maybe I can talk my household into doing a full cart!

NO VOMITING! Vomiting is icky and not a good response.

The cart is pretty cute, we used one to haul all manner of things around Pennsic- ice, boxes, trash, luggage. Quite a sturdy little deal.

Jeffrey found out that the wheelbarrow also makes a great lounge chair. I'd add it's also fun to take off at a dead run with it once the occupant has dozed off....

Well, I was going to post some of my work but apparently all my hard work and desire to make the SCA look better on a budget is considered an eyesore and "dumbass", so I guess I will just continue to make ugly stuff for my existing customers...  :?

Does it look medieval? or does it look like Boyscout furniture?

if it LOOKS medieval, and not like some bizarre lego construction, more power to you.

This is what I have pics of right now. ABC ent. has plywood 6 board chests in a simple and "ornate" form. I have pics of those on the camera. We also have our standard ABC Bed. (below).

We have plans to put a colapsable armour stand, Glastonbury Chair, colapsable table, later period style bed, colapsable stool, camp kitchen, and 6 board style coolers into production. Our intent is to have an entire camp set up (minus tent) available for folks.

Our stuff is not necissarily "historic" or "authentic" it is Medievaloid. We are trying to make the SCA better looking by giving an option that looks better but doesn't break the wallet.

Do not attribute to skill that which can be explained by OCD. :)

I generate about twice as much firewood as I do finished product. I'm way too picky about what I make.

What I was referring to were the table-contraptions that take up more space than a "properly" done trestle (thre legged) table. THe huge monstrous thrones that LOOK like they were cut out of plywood. (Yours dont!).

Like I said.. I am still sitting in freakin bag-chairs.. I really need to get off my ass (pardon the pun) and get some stuff done.. but I have been concentrating so much on my turning that my flat-stock work has "slipped" a bit.
