WTB Lightweight Shield Basket

Post by Brennan mac Fearghus »

I'm looking for a shield basket that is lightweight enough that it won't really change the movement, but will keep my digits unsmashed. Any suggestions?

You know Karl I had the same thought. I may do a production run of your shield handle design. Probably take 10-15 minutes to make one maybe sell them for 7-8 dollars each and make a small fortune.

The shield was street signs in it's former life. I'm currently just using a basic handle. I could get you measurements if you need. Ugly as sin, doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm a big fan of quick and dirty. Thanks.

Shield basket is done. It is the definition of down and dirty. Just need an address. In the future though Brennus will have them.

I cobbled somthing togeather out of a stainless rough from the hammer shoulder com, a bit of 3/4th" dowl for the grip, and some legs made of bar stock. dont way much, is sturdy. Pretty cheap and easy, assuming rough from the hammer is still around...

The basket is very simple but so easy to use.

Ok this is mine based off Karl's design I made this maybe 6 years ago so it looks a bit used.

the top grip is slightly smaller than the bottom grip so they fit together and when the two are held together they become very solid.

I even hate to give away this secret this basket gives me so much more control over my shield and it makes my interior shield profile much smaller and sleek.

Anyway if anyone wants one I will make a few this week when I am done with the orders I already have. I'll decide on a price but it wont be more than ten dollars each plus shipping.

That is very innovative, it has to weight alot less than the monster Stainless steel one I have! I have one I was working on made out of HDPE plastic, it is VERY nasty and isn't as strong I am sure. BUT, it does beat the heck out of a hockey glove for looks.
Thanks for sharing your picture.

Thanks for posting the photos, Brennus.

This was not originally my design. I modified a design from Baron Sir Master Master Robert De de Spencer. He had an armory back in the 80s out of Salt Lake. Great guy, hope some of you have a chance to know him.

Brennan, your basket is in the mail. Let me know what you think.

Corby, there are even easier answers than that.

Go to a used sporting goods store. Buy a used batting helmet. Cut off the brim, and cut the remainder in half. Rivet leather tabs onto it and then rivet those to the shield.

You now have TWO (count em) TWO light plastic hand protections (which you can get in black usually) for around $5. Doesn't get any better than that.

Ugly plastic vs ugly aluminum.

So you recommend ugly black plastic over ugly aluminum?

Atlantia has a "no obvious modern materials in armor" rule, though it hasn't been enforced much recently. More's the pity.
