review: A vitus shield

Post by Nissan Maxima »

I bought one of my men a huge Vitus heater shield for melee. It arrived painted with the team logo. Vitus was a pleasure to do business with. The shield is just fucking marvelous. I will post a picture when I get one.

I hope to be getting one for Pennsic.

If I can't break it, no SCA fighter can.

I saw a couple at AWP, wow....what a great job he does on these......soooooooo jealous!

Nothing is unbreakable. However, my new method is pretty damn tough. The core wooden shield has been improved.

You know how I fight Vitus!   If your shields last a couple of years of the abuse I give them it's a tank that is well worth dumping an aluminum one!
Yay looking better! :P

They are holding up fine so far. The key was for me to stop bending the blanks myself- since I was only having luck bending crappy softer wood. I have a guy who does that now, and I cover them with the magic stuff.

My (vitus) shield is fairly heavy, but its also big. (24" X 48") Its a war shield after all. I really dont think its much heavier than one of my old wood heaters of same size

A-Prone got a HUGE shield.
I will be honest, smaller and medium (knightly) sized shields are best for my system. These barn doors that people buy from me- if you want to fight in single combat with an archer's pavice on your arm, don't even ask me for a shield...unless you are strong and fit.

I don't HAVE a standard heater. My shields weigh more than aluminum- always have and always will.

I bought ten. Five in the same general dimensions as the Black Prince Effigy, five smaller knightly shields for late 14th century folks. I will be offering these for sale as I receive them.

Not the general dimensions- exact copies of the Black Prince shields.

That's not heavy at all, actually. I am used to a nine to ten pound shield.

It's those gigantic heaters that weigh so damn much.

When i first got my 30" centerboss round i thought wow this is friking heavy then i mounted the boss and grip and started using it and it seems great .good ballance, and it seems very defiant( odd term) blows seem to stop dead on it no flex no mush it seems to tell enemy swords to screw off
i like it :D
