Locks from Europe

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Darmour,

If it makes you feel better, most locks used by rifle makers in Pennsylvania during the "Golden Era" of the American longrifle were made in Europe and exported to America by the box. Gunsmiths were good, but making a lot of good, consistent, quality locks took dedication and time they did not have. Most locks came from Germany, some from Bohemia and some from Britain.

Locks were the most sophisticated piece of technology in common use in the American colonies (save for some clocks) and the locks of unloaded rifles were commonly used at home to light a new fire in the fireplace. (in many original colonial homes, holes on the ceiling near the fireplace attest to bad practices about leaving guns loaded....) later these locks were also fitted to "lighters" used explusively for lightin fires safely. They looked like a flintlock pistol, without a barrel but fitted with two little legs,

http://www.ambroseantiques.com/fpistols ... ighter.htm

and the priming pan was just dried tinder fibers with a sprinle of powder. Safer than using your gun and fancy too!!

Good luck in your endeavor!

Rowan

Darmour - thank you for the pictures. You did not say that you made dog locks for $85.00. You should post pictures here too.

If you sell it, I am pretty sure that even muzzle loaders have to be sent to an FFL holder, but I could be wrong. You may want to check.

Cris

I would love to buy it, but I have to wait until next summer.

No rules apply

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Hi Chris,

That is incorrect.

Muzzleloaders (even modern ones) are considered by ATF "antique" guns because they do not fire modern ammunition. They are therefore excempted from the rules that control modern firearms. You can ship it to anyone.

Shipping this gun is not unlike shipping a sword.

I am sorry that you cannot buy it now, (I will take a trade for a properly fitting set of stainless arms and legs though)

Thanks anyway! :)

Rowan

Like I said, I wasn't positive. I hope you find a buyer. It is a beautiful piece. If my knight was back from the army, I would be able to knock out some armour, mores the pitty.

re- bump

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Ok, I DO need the cash.

$300 plus shipping.

No FFL needed to transfer this rifle because it is not legally a "firearm" but an "antique" even though it is a modern made piece.

Any takers to help me complete my harness?

Thanks!

Rowan

In the six months, did you manage to find gunbroker or gunsamerica?
I don't mind stuff like this showing up here, but there are other sites more geared toward selling firearms.
Stuff I will trade for: PWM controllers, steel sheet/rod/bar (4130/410/1050/toolsteel), ITC, casting supplies, wood tools, silver, oxpho blue, gun stuff (9luger/357mag/12g/7.62x54R/22LR), hammers, stakes, or pitch me!
