List of suppliers of Impact weapons

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Ok,

Torldvadr inspired me to start this thread.

Can we try to make a list of the suppliers (and individual products) for SCA legal impact weapons?

While SCA legal swords should be described as impact weapons since they cannot pierce or cut, they are not the purpose of this inquiry.

I am referring to Axes, maces, hammers, flails, poleaxes, warhammers, Halberds, Godendags, and any other non-sword SCA legal weapons the forerunners of which were meant to effect action on the opponent by means other than piercing thrust and slash.
Or rather, to be more precise, the parts to assemble them.

Who makes them? Who is making what at this time?

I can start (please correct me) with Mandrake's beautiful axe head(did I mention I LIKE it?), (can you add a thrusting tip to the protruding shaft of this axe to thrust with it?)

And also his prototype rubber flange mace (which seems to be in development in Area 51, in cooperation with some secret military development branch and scheduled for sometime next year) :)

Then I just saw Revival's poleaxe head. (Nice!!!)

Anyone else care to add to the list?

Thanks!

By My Hand designs does a nice job of making mace, axe and polearm heads. Some kingdoms require additional padding to make thme legal.

You can make them your self if you are so inclined. Crepe sole rubber from a shoe repair supplier glued into a thicker mass (at least 1 1/4" wide) with 3M Spray 77 or Barge's contact cement gives you your starting point. Take a jig or band saw to cut it into shape. For maces, flanges are glued onto a piece of heavy duty radiator hose with shoe goo. To hold an axe head in place, use a piece of sole leather wrapped around the haft and gorilla glued and laced in place. (Then tape the snot out of it).

A local fighter can help you get this stuff together. It's hard to describe.

While we are talking materials, I prefer Endocel for padding. It's lightweight and extra-protective. It will also come in black if you order it thus. I get mine from Hanna Rubber in Kansas City, but there is probably someone more local for you.

I like the By My Hand weapon heads, but because I travel a lot and am so often fighting in a different kingdom than my own, I switched to the Mandrake architectural foamfor my weapon heads. It is soft enough to pass the marshals (I had to cut my BMH head down a 1/2" and attach foam to it to pass at Gulf Wars) but stiff enough to stay the shape I cut it into.

The mace head is on the drawing board, we have the design nailed down, now I just have to get caught up on everything else so I can devote time and money to get it produced. Next year we should have prototypes, the design is pretty ingenious.

apparently many of master Jamies heads may be illegal in Northshield....

well illegal on anything longer than a 54 inch handel.

Or that was one interpretation at practice.

I'm trying to get clarification on the great axe/pole arm/ other weapon on a stick rules.

To my point if the interpretation of the rules postulated at practice is right

i believe _all_ of these pole arms are illegal in the fine kingdom of Northshield

What is the weight like with your architectural foam? I find my BMH axe head a little lighter than I really like.

AXes and maces

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Johannes,

I am not sure if you are the gent I spoke to on the telephone about a week ago about tips and axes and maces.

If I may respectfully suggest, why not use OPM? If you can give enough info to the guys here (but not enough so a competitor knocks you off before you even start) You could start taking advance orders on the mace and fund your R&D that way. If you assume what you would think the price could be, and pre-sell them, you may have the money for any molds, patterns, etc. If you tell me what your target shape is and I like it, I'll buy one in advance and prepay it. I love impact weapons.

Call it "The Mace Head Fund", I am sure it would be a hit, it should have impact, and get the idea through the thickest skull. (Ok no more bad puns).

What do you think?

Respectfully

Rowan
