Making a two hand sword: What parts do I need?

Post by Glaukos the Athenian »

Hello,

I'd like to make a two hander sword for SCA use, Talhofer style. That pieces do I need besides the rattan? where do I get them? How do I make them if they are not made?

Thanks!!

You'll need fillament tape, duct tape, a quillion possibly thrusting tips and possibly a pommel.

I recommend mandrake armoury (www.mandrake.com) form the thrusting tips, quillions and pommel.

You could also look at Iron monger, good service but probably not as good looking. All depends on what style your after.

Mandrake fittings: large square aluminium quillion, pewter disc pommel

Grip is rasped/sanded down, covered in PVA glue, approx. 2mm thick thread wrapped around, riser added from thick rope, then calfskin is soaked in water and stretched over the grip with another PVA coat underneath. The whole thing is kept in place with another (removable) layer of thread, left to dry and dyed afterwards.

I have made a matching pair, both swords are about 130 cm long. Obviously the alu/pewter combination worked for the hardware as I got some positive feedback on balance from people who (opposed to myself  ) understand how to use these.

Cheers,
William

Just curious, how long are people making thier 2 handed swords (over all lenght and grip length) and how much are they weighing in at?

My sword weighs in at 3 lbs & 6 oz. My blade is 4 feet and my handle is 18 inches. I also use the Mandrake aluminum quillions and pommel, and can't say enough good things about them.

I've got the mandrake's too.

Sweet things they are.

I have the pear shaped pommel in AL.

I'd rather have a pewter one for a bit more weight on that end, but otherwise it's awesome.

They are by no means what I'd call cheap, but they're worth it.
It looked better in my head....
Damnit.
