Looking for Punch & Die Sets (3/16") for Whitney No

Post by Vermillion »

I was wondering where I could find economical die & punch sets for my Whitney No.7 punch.

In particular I need the standard 3/16" round, but some of the others that would make sliding rivet holes would be nice as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks !

Sometimes they come up on ebay. It will help if you know the specs on them. The #8 (and #2) tool uses 1/2" punches and 7/8"-14 tpi dies. I think the #7 matches one of those but not the other. Try a search for old AA posts, too. The sellers don't always know what tools will be compatible. Lots more of the tools are sold on ebay than the tooling.

You may have to wait a long time, but they probably won't go for full price. Full price is around $20 a pair, which isn't bad if you only need a size or two. They last.

I'm on the lookout for misc. sizes for my #8 to fill in gaps for a more complete set. I have an OK collection growing from ebay, but a few more matched pairs would be nice. :)

Simple advise: If there's something you really need, buy it. If it's just something you'd like to have, keep an eye out and be willing to wait.

Oh, and sliding rivet holes are the same round die used a few times in a row, cleaned up with a file. Slotted and other non-round dies will not tend to be economical for a home armouring shop.

Im not sure if the number 7A punch needs different tooling than the 7. If they are compatible then you can order punches and dies directly from Roper Whitney.

go to www.roperwhitney.com and click on online ordering center

https://www22.ssldomain.com/roperwhitne ... egoryid=70
for a direct link to what it seems your looking for.

Their tooling is pretty cheap but their shipping is a killer, so I'd recommend ordering whatever your gonna need for the near future in one shot.

If you want them to make a slot punch then you gotta call them directly.
They are VERY EXPENSIVE. You will also need to punch the slots when the plates are still flat as the slot punch will crush any rounded plate you try to use it on. I've found that punching the slots in plates and then forming them deforms the slot anyway and you need to file it anyway.
So, it doesn't really even save you all that much time.
Slot punches are a big waste of money IMO unless you do Stonekeep level volume :)

Also, some advice, if you are using 3/16" rivets do NOT order a 3/16" width slot. They are pretty exact and the rivet will be just barely too big for the slot. Get a little tiny bit of clearance so you don't have to file down every single slot you make. (this does not apply to the round hole punches)

Hope that helps. There may be cheaper sources out there but, can't go too wrong going direct to the folks who make the punch. At least you will know for sure its compatible.

Dies

Post by VikingLeather »

Vermillion,

Some time back I bought a couple of 7 1/2 Whitneys and a coffee can overflowing with dies. I haven't looked through them yet, and this might be a reason for me to do so. I think there is one thing on the 7 1/2s though, they use a 7 die on the top and 8 on the bottom or some foolishness. I will check to see what I have. Is the 3/16 the only one you need?

Viking, you're almost right-the #7-1/2 uses the 1/2 dia punches on top, same as #8, but uses the smaller dies on the bottom like the #7. Tooling for the #7 and #8 are not compatible.

If you get to that coffee can any time soon, I could use a couple of spare 7/32 punches (or sets) for either size if you've got extree.

Jacob, I've probably got some extras for the #8. Anything you're looking for particularly?

Frank,

The 3/16" is the most important right now, just for basic rivet holes. Let me know if you have any you want to get rid of.

Tooling I'm keeping an eye out for:
#8 (1/2 punch diameter, 7/8-14 die)

3/16" punch
13/64" Die (3/16" clearance hole)
1/4" set
17/64" set (1/4" clearance hole)
9/32" die

Others considered.

I'm also looking for any tooling that I can use in this punch: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/jselmer/ima ... d%20sm.JPG

It takes 7/16" round shank punches, and 7/8" round dies, each held with a set screw. I suspect I'll have to get my lathe up and running or custom order new sets. The bench punch is much handier than clamping the tool in a vise or using it on the floor.
