So... it's Sunday, must be time for another 'clean-up the shop sale'

Originaly this was a bascinet shell. It didn't work out because of sizing reasons (customer wanted it to fit over a martial arts helmet ). So I ended up making him a new one. In the process of making that, I ran out of sheilding gas for the stainless, and had to finish it up at a friend's house. This one, was allready done, and has been sitting in the shop for a while. I keep meaning to get more tri-mix, but never seem to get around to it. Without it, can't weld the stainless....

I can however, rivet it.

I finaly got sick of looking at this, and turned it into a bascinet/sugarloaf hybrid. It ain't perfect... but it will work, and I don't think it looks half bad. Just missing one riveted seam.

14g stainless (304). Skull and back skirt welded inside and out. Faceplate riveted with 3/16" stainless rivets (318) spaced at under 1.25".

Measures at the brow (interior):
9.5" front to back (actual measurement is 9.75" but because of the shape, 9.5" is the 'safe' bet).
7.75" side to side
27.5" circumfrence

You can weld stainless with 75/25.. Most stainless is welded with it.
I prefer tri-mix too, but on 304 its not that big a difference. The main thing to me is getting the higher grade alloy wire, not what they will hand you if you just ask for alloy for ss. It about twice the price but worth it.

To be honest the decision wasn't made really on what would work best, but...

Gas supply place has some strange ways to be. They won't sell me a big tank outright, only lease. The will sell me little tanks, but the only thing suitable for stainless that they put into little tanks is tri-mix. I'm sure they have a good reason for it... but I can't figure out what it might be.

Sorry, but no. Just... not much into the event thing any more, and never have made a Gulf Wars (or lillies of pensic, or great western. ).

The item I've been looking for came up for sale on Sunday at a very reasonable price, I saw it and bought it on Monday, and it is in my hands on Wednesday. Well done!

It looks even more marvelous in my hands than it does in the pictures above.
If I weren't swamped with other projects I'd get it padded and strapped in time for Gulf Wars, but as it is I'll have it ready for the Lysts at Castleton as part of my 14th century Pas armour.
