Pre made crossguard sword auction.
I offered one of these a while ago and had a bit of interest. I ended up making an extra while filling the order and I'm offering it here.
It's 35" overall. It weighs approx 3lbs. The handle is 5 1/4". The balance point is 2" past the guard.
The low profile tip is neoprene high density rubber and it is anchored in place by leather strips. The sword itself is planed to 1 1/4" and tapers to 1 1/4" at the point. It has 8.5" fullers ground into the flat of the blade to make it look more real. The whole thing is covered in silver ducttape (not grey) and has the edges marked out in black electrical tape.
The handle is rectangular and wrapped in black suede and then wrapped in twisted brass wire. Flat brass stock is wrapped around the top and bottom of the handle.
The guard (aluminum) and pommel (pewter) are from mandrake.
Shipping is $15 to anywhere in the continental US.
I dont want to take orders on these as I suck at filling them. Every once in a while, I'll make one up and sell it... but if you really want one, drop me a line. oneail@hotmail.com
I'd like to auction this baby off.... $120 is the start. This will go until 5pm friday april 13th and the winner can pay by paypal. Any interest?

Currently out of my range right now, too.
BUT... this winter...
That is another story...
BUT... this winter...

That's real purty, but it seems like a lot. Not because it isn't excellent work, but because it's something that's basically a consumable. From what I hear (not from experience, yet), the dynamic of using a cross-hilt is quite different from slinging a typical SCA basket stick around. You'd have to practice with one of these regularly to get used to it, and not just save it up for the fancy tournaments. That means normal wear and tear, or having to buy an extra one just for practice. When the blade eventually goes to hell, you have to take the hilt apart and rebuild it.
Now, if you could make a removeable hilt based on, say, a cross and pommel welded to an aluminum tube (I've seen 'em) with permanent fancy wrapping, make the blade itself the only disposable part, and include a couple of replacement blades... that, I'd pay three figures for.

And hilt size is very personal. They aren't a one-size-fits-all thing. From the look of the one in the picture, I'd have to strip the covering and shave it down.

I agree with you Klaus... This isnt really for the use it all the time people.. Something like this is for the - I dont have any time but I do have money - people. Using it can be a bit different but only because so many people use the baskethilt as part of thier shot.. If you hold onto the sword correctly, it doesnt change much at all...
Things is the pommel and guard themselves costs $70, plus another $10 in leather, brass, neoprene and I could be making more $$$ at McDonalds. If I sell it, cool. If not, my wife has a cool new sword
I'd love to see a detachable hilt too. I've only seen Brian Price's and never one for sale....

Then I reckon some enterprising soul ought to design and market one...
I saw at Gulf Wars that By My Hand had a pre-made hilt . It was a wheel pommel and Quillions connected by steel straps. It looked like you had to carve to shape, the handle portion of the rattan. It then slid through the quillions up into the wheel pommel. I suppose you tape wrapped the grip to hold it all on. I thought it looked a little rough finished but could be cleaned up.
