FS Low Point bascinet w/ camail (bidding!)

Post by Andrew Young »

I will happily give this helmet a total polish and shine overhaul for shipping...even a mirror shine if the buyer wants it. The aventail needs some ring replacements, which I will repair no charge.

The facts:

--custom barrel vervelles

--low point (a bit more unusual)

--decorative aventail red leather band

--brass bulb vervelle ends

--camail raised higher

--neck has a slight neck flare for safety (hidden under camail)

--will fit around a 24.5 head

--rivetted bargrill (then hidden tack welds for 'anal' safety)-- very sturdy

--hybrid aventail of 14, 16 and 18 guage.

--Curious notes: this helmet was used (before the bargrill was made) in an armour presentation at the Washington National Cathedral and been seen on Washington DC area TV news interview broadcast. So its been garnished with 15 minutes of fame. (oh, and Elvis once put it on and the Pope has blessed it...twice :P )

PM or email with best offer.

Oh, I might also part with these pauldrons to go with the helmet. The edges are rolled all the way around making them very sturdy 14 guage defenses. They have two brass grommets for lacing up and a leather swatch on the bottom for lacing into an arm harness. (btw, same helmet)

Not quite sold....yet.

I think Ive hit Pms....going to check email.

A question arose as to size.

At the widest point, head is about 24.25 around. There was ample room for padding in the helmet but its not oversized...has a nice period size to it.

Durasteel,

I went to the link on the bottom of your post, and poked around. I found a COP skirt attached to a Churburg looking torso. Is there some precident for that? I've never seen such a thing.

You mean a breastplate?

Image

Yes there is "evidence" (usually pictorial) for all sorts of faulds especially in the late 14th up to the mid 15th century: brigadined, mail, scale, lammelar, full hoop horizontal lames, semi hoop triangular horizontal lames. But we dont always visually see exposed cuirasses (ie breast and back with a fauld) during the jupon era...because the cuirass is concealed.

Also, Im learly of being too rigid with armour compartmentalization because human whimsy/interest dictates a more fluid definition of what is meant by coat of plates, brigadine, corizzina, cuirass. When does a coat of plates with a large lung plate stop being a coat of plates and become a true breastplate? What do you call a steel breastplates that hinges on the sides but buckles in back?--there is evidence for this too. If the definition requires fabric to have been attached to the outside....but the components are identical to a steel cuirass which would otherwise be exposed....is that a corizzina or a globose steel cuirass.... its an endless debate using words/terms that can change with the slight modification of a component.

Geesh, did I just hijack my own thread?
