WTB Cervelliere (Master Cet?)

Post by marcus the pale »

I'm looking to make a cervelliere helm for SCA combat but have no skill to dish a top on my own. Also, since my head is oblong in shape, generic sizes off the shelf wont work for me. 14g at least, 12g depending on the price. If anyone has time for a custom commission like this, please contact me. Thanks.

**edited to clarify**
I only need the top, the rest I would like to make myself.

I would be interested as well, only I would only need one in 18ga or lighter and close fitting.

Yeah, I don't have that kind of money to spend on a helm. If I could pull that much together, I wouldn't wear it for a few years till I was sure it wasn't going to get beat to pieces since I'm still a newb. I will admit though, that was part of the inspiration for this project. Also, see the "off the shelf" part of my original post.

me too. I'd love a cervelliere in 18ga Stainless the fit just a little looser than a ball cap.

Funny you guys should ask about this. I'll be posting a review of a cervelliere that Dave Rylak/Cet just made for me, hopefully tonight or tomorrow, once I snap some photos and my one year old takes a nap so I can write the thing up!

The abbreviated version is this: the helm rocks, the price was more than fair, the communication was exemplary and I couldn't be happier. I'm not sure what his queue looks like at the moment, but it would certainly be worth contacting him and asking.

Thanks! Looks like he might have three more commissions if he wants the work (or has time). I'll have to drop him a note.

Maybe I'm out of line, but does it not seem steep to people for $749 for a welded up skullcap? It has an aventail, and a grill, and it is probably 3 times thicker than any real skullcap, and all these things add cost, but isn't that close to the cost of an SCA bascinet of decent shape, and a much simpler helm?

Please keep in mind I have paid thousands of dollars for individual helmets, I am not a cheapskate, and I think armourers deserve decent wages.

You're right, Chef, that guy must be crazy.

It isn't as simple as it looks would be my defense on the pricing, combined with the cost of the welded aventail. Without the mail, the helmet would be $415, still a lot for a mild steel helmet until you account for the step we put into the back plate to create enough space to allow the aventail mounting leather to mount between the back plate and the skull, which completely makes the look of the whole thing. That leather is mounted by a set of flush rivets right above the bottom edge of the helmet, the back plate is attached 3/4" above that by the rivets you can easily see, which is why they are so much higher on the skull than usual.

If I didn't have to worry about SCA safety things, this is a very simple helmet, and we could charge a hell of a lot less. As it is, it was a pretty custom project for as simple as it looks, with a couple features I have never seen done before. I think the price is quite fair.

Don't get me wrong, I love that helm, and the price is fine IMHO. I am at the point in my SCA career (the beginning) where I should be wearing something that I don't mind when it gets beat to bear snot. Also, I want the opportunity to make more armour with my own hands, the more I do, the more I appreciate the work that goes in to the really high quality gear.

My compliments on your work, Johannes.

will you work in 16 or 18 mild and stainless? I want one, but I don't need it to be SCA legal gauge.

Chef, your mistaking this for a really simple project just means we did it right. I hate it when a customer can tell I spent a ton of time on something like this. The real ones were very simple, the SCA one should at least look that way.

Marcus,

Got your PM. Get with Cet here for a top, he is the man when it comes to parts for stuff you want to do yourself. His price on it is great, and I endorse his products pretty heartily, he takes the time to get it right.
