Where do I find bits for this punch.

Post by Mad Matt »

Picked this punch up at pennsic. I only have a 3/8 bits for it. Where can I get more.

It's not a whitney with a number on it. Tried at the local fastener supplier and they said they couldn't get them.

Thanks I sent them an e-mail but didn't see anything about punches on their site.

Any other suggestions if this doesn't work?

They're a different company then the one who made the punch. Think they'll have dies for it?

Also they show punches other then round but when this punch works the punch rotates. How would the oval punches work in this?

Does the punch actually rotate ? I understand the ram driving the punch is threaded but the punch itself shouldn't be turning - as you say, if the punch is turning, it can only work with round punches.

And a bit of history. I checked the name on my punch - it's a W.A. Whitney No. 6, so I googled WA Whitney...

"Due to a variety of circumstances, by 1911 ownership of W.A. Whitney was completely in the hands of VanderBogart and a man named N.A. Merlin. After relinquishing his interest in W.A. Whitney, William Whitney established the Whitney Metal Tool Co., which later became known as Roper Whitney. However, he was more of an inventor than a businessman. By 1918, Whitney had exited the hand tool business and returned to Oregon, Illinois, where he ran a small machine shop until 1924. Following this, he entered into a period of semi-retirement."

So... chances are the punch you have and the punch I have are both made by predecessors of Roper Whitney, and they're our best bet for dies. Also says something about how old these punches may be....

Yeah the punch rotates with the handle. Figured $75 for a punch that'll do 3/8 through 1/4 was a good deal.

After trying to find the punches on ebay, I went straight to the company website. The shipping was pricey, but overall I actually came out cheaper to buy then brand new off the company website, than I was trying to buy used ones off ebay.

I have contacted Roper Whitney before about punches for a #8 WA Whitney punch. The punch designs are fairly standardized (which is surprising) and they sell a number of punch and die combinations that are reverse compatible to older models that they didn't make. Does not apply to all makes/models. I would call directly and ask. Their sales support staf was very knowledgeable.

About tax return time I need to drop $100 on punch&dies. They run $20 a set for my punch. :( Suddenly the cost of the tool is more expensive then I imagined.

This the place you e-mailed?

Try calling them on the telephone.

McMaster Carr also carries the punches, dies, and the entire unit. Look on Page 2261. I can't figure out how to link their catalogue page or I would.
