Question on Leg Armour

Post by Fulke »

I am a relative newb to combat, and have been fighting since fall 07.

I portray a 15th C Englishman, which to me would mean Gothic armour if my persona could afford it. I lucked into a Coventry Sallet and currently wear a combination of new and used Ice Falcon on my upper body. (Knight shoulders, splinted arms, stainless placart)

I purchased a relatively inexpensive set of mild steel legs from MyArmStreet and have no serious complaints other than coverage - No wrap plate.
I am seeking suggestions to improve on;

1. better protection of my thighs and hips...Although I have become positively psychotic about shield coverage :)
2. I'd like to go stainless if I buy more leg armour.

I'm wondering if adding something like a cuisse would be money better spent than new legs, or should I try to find someone to craft some tassets, chain skirt, or somesuch?

I appreciate any input before I sink more money into my kit - Like a foolish new person, I have already sunk about 13-1400 into my "starter" kit. (and yes, I realize I could have gotten better than I did if I had ASKED knowledgeable people first  )

Before you go cash diving again (although you seem more than happy to do so :D ) I would suggest a set of padded cuisses from either Therion at Therion arms or from Stephen, can't remember his website off the top of my head, see how they work for you. It's a minimal expense and if you don't like it you've not spent overly much and they can still be used under whatever set of new legs you decide to purchase...

You can always add the wrap plate to the legs you currently have. Simple to do, especially if you make it out of leather.

If you like your current set up besides not having the coverage you need, I would suggest just having a set of wrap plates made up. Keep what is comfortable :)

Adding the padded cuisses woudl help too.

If you like the legs just add wrap plates, they are vvery easy to make with eaither steel or leather and shouldn't cost you much at all to do.

Pics of wrap plates please?

I need a one left side as well. Been asking several of you guys, but I probably sound like I am from Mars when I asl.

What types of supplemental wrap plates are there, and how do you attach them?

I am wearing a set of good Waldryk legs, but I am getting my left leg pummeled because the wrap plates are too small..... I'll take the shot, it is the long recovery afterwards that kills me. and pain for nothing is not fun if it can be avoided.

I have tassets, although admittedly crudely made, I don't find them helpful, because the blows that land are coming in from below the tassets in the form of butt wraps and high leg shots. If you are attempting to minimize your recovery time as a priority, I would suggest spending your money and effort on a wrap plate AND picking up a pair of Crash Pads (padded bike shorts) to wear under your hose.

I resisted wearing the crash pads for years. I was reluctant to add yet another layer (and a totally modern one at that). But I now see the huge impact they have on my ability to train without the significant bruising.

Thank you Jess,

You are correct tassets cover the front, not the back of the leg. That is where the saddle goes... or was supposed to go :)

Last practice I went to, I got hit BEWTEEN the pads in the crash pads I was wearing under my legs... the more annoying because i thought I was decently covered. Two weeks later I still feel the area as sensitive.

The very skilled -and patiently kind- Felix landing his best three shots less than 1/4 inch apart from each other in perfectly legal and technically beautiful hits. Not his falut at all. My armour let me down on that area

With my legs from Armorer Eric I was getting those deflected (tho the plates showed their strain) and only the truly "vicious" wrap around wraps made it. These legs are lighter, but I need additional "wrap" coverage"
At least until I learn how to fight and not just be a walking pell.... :)

Mikael - I actually *did* ask about wrap plates after I received the legs, and never heard back about them.

Don't get me wrong, I have used the legs and have been well satisfied considering the price was very fair. They will be used by another fighter in our group eventually.

I truly appreciate all the feedback. Through a member here, I believe my problem has been solved.

I will be incorporating some padded shorts into the invisible portion of my rig as well.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and guidance!

i am a newbie at fighting, only 6 months, and i don't like getting bruised upper thigh and hip bones either. i'm 45 and it takes a while for me to heal from those nasty green bruises on the hip bone. so i found that wearing this war skirt made by "the smitthenner" http://www.schmitthenner.com/SCH1007zz.jpg much more tolerable to taking hits in that area plus it's my new kidney belt as well. it covers the butt cheek and upper back of leg quite well. only prob i have is when i sit i have to flip up those hardened tassets.
if it isn't armour, or you can't take it to bed, it isn't worth havin'

If you like the wrap plates I put on my legs I can sell the wrap plates seperate no problem. Price would depend on material and finish.

Sorry for the quick derail, but after reading this thread, it reminds me of two very valuable lessons that I have learned in fighting. Pain is a great motivator and teacher being the first, and move your feet into the blow stealing some of the impact from the incomming shot....granted it took some really fantastic bruises to learn this, but it paid off greatly....now if I could just learn to block my head as well as I block my legs!
