FS: SALLET (I think) -$100 (Final Offer)

I am selling this 14g stainless steel SCA LEGAL proto-type Sallet (I think its a Sallet). Although it is rather rough and probably not perfect, I still think it is worth the asking price of $100 + shipping to your location. This will be my final offer. If it doesn't sell I will put it up on the mantle and admire my great work of art (well ok, I'll admire it for what it is...)

This helmet has an inside measurement of 26, a side to side measurement of 7 1/2", a front to back measurement of 9", a top to bottom measurement of 10 on the sides, a top to bottom measurement of 12" in the front and back. No opening is greater then 15/16" -even though it may look that way.

I'm new to the Armour Archive, so I'm not exactly sure how buying armor works but I am definitely interested in the helmet. I'm getting ready to give back my loaner one... Anyway, my email is lopezj30@bellsouth.net. If you could email me and let me know what I need to do, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

One of the signature elements of a sallet is the tail. Yours doesn't have much if any tail.

Well thats why I'm not sure if this is a sallet. This helmet style has been very popular for a number of years. I have had several dozen people asking me for one and now that I have one -no one seems interested. Geuss thats how the hammer falls.....

Well, I might be interested if you were to do a less rough one. Dependant on a slew of things, obviously, but still.

I'd like to see what a more refined version would look like and what it would cost.

Also interested in finding out about more refined versions of bascinets and kettles.

Here is the thing, you have put a distinctly sallet like visor on a helmet that is basically a dished skull welded with a slight comb and then had a curved sheet of steel just welded on the back.

This is what a sallet looks like in profile.

The tale shapes vary but they don't really come straight down.
Your visor is atleast on the right track, the ledge you made on the eyeslot is probably too deep.

You have a couple of options, you can work on it more, you can take the visor off and make a new helm for it and then just put a bargrill or what not on that helm. You can wait and see if it sells or you can cut a deal and trade with me and start over from scratch. If your interested PM me.

Peder:

I know what a true sallet looks like, but unless you have the lower section (bevor I believe) it is no where near legal for SCA combat. I only made this helmet due to the overwhelming popularity at one time and the numerous daily emails I was getting for this style. I bought the proto-type from the Armour Store several years ago and everyone wanted one just like it. Once I finally got offmy butt and made it -everyone who wanted it vanished! Now I just want to get rid of it and concentrate on my normal everydays helms.

RenJunkie:

Unfortubately I do not do less rough helmets -I just get too bored of a helmet after an hour or so and want to be done with it. I am just to hyper for my own good in most matters. This is why Ioffer cheap munition grade items for the poor fighters of the world.

hjalmr,

Take it off the market, and sell it in three months.

You have temporarily glutted the low end market.

It's cheaper than a spun dome, and it would work great for a new person. It's worth a hundred bucks, but you have sold a lot of discount helms in the last two weeks.

The market will come back, but right now, it's saturated.

PS: When are you coming back through Memphis Freiman?

sadly, not this year. Normally, I like to do two or three days in the old stomping grounds, but there isn't money this year.

I know I want to try myself against your knight. He has always been an inspiration to me, and I have always measured myself against him. He was the SCA's big stick when I was new, so he is my boogie man.

But I will whoop him if I am able. I am a lot better than I was twenty years ago.

I have an SCA legal sallet sitting on the bookshelf behind me. The bevor primarily deals with the front of the helmet to protect the chin, which you have put bars on to replace. One of the big things that throws people off when looking at sallets is that they are typically photographed with the bottom flat but worn with the bottom at an angle. So the one posted above when put on the head looks more like this.

If not even slightly more angled. That is less then 10 degrees off flat.

If the only thing you would have changed on your helmet was the going into a flat tail you would probably have had a line of people for $125. For just making this change.

Even done very crudely with quite straight lines it captures a sallet significantly better.

If I were you I'd take the visor off slap a bar grill on there and sell it. Then make a new helm with just a simple tail and see how it comes out. People will likely jump on it. I know I would have.

If you want some more ideas on tails look at Darius's gothic armour notes in the pattern section.

Here are too of a historical reproduction being worn without the bevor, which it would need that or a bargrill like you did on yours inorder to be legal.
