Iraq needs all that old crap armour in the closet

Hi guys!,

I usually wouldn't ask something like this on the archive. I'm deployed to Iraq with the US Army and since the nearest SCA fighter practice is somewhere over 6000 miles away.

Now to the problem. I only have my personal stuff. I have quite a number of interested people. (5-10, it's surprising how many peoples ears stick up when you start talking about beating the pudding out of each other). No one (sans me)here is an SCA fighter. I'm going to have to grow my own fighter practice.

Heres where I need you guys help. If you have anything at all that will help us out we'd love too take it off your hands. We have NOTHING. So anything will help, yes even that old barrel helm everyone hates, you know, the hunter orange one. We'll even take that.

Thanks

Man, imagine the HUGE press and media coverage if someone were to go over there and do a decent SCA PR job.

Imagine if the 14 CM guys did it first....a couple of high end transitional kits and assorted jupons, surcoats and heraldry....but I'm sure the liability / insurance / BOD thing would make sure it never had a chance.

Lets just send over some carpet tassets...and they can just use medical collars for gorgets.....it'll be fine....

They're U.S. Marines. Outside Fallujah. Dressed up as gladiators. Yesterday -- you know, when insurgents were busy killing people all over the country. What are they doing? Why, taking part in a Ben-Hur recreation, complete with "confiscated" Iraqi horses.

Aaron,

I just left Camp Victory in April. I left a few SCA things behind. If you can get over to Victory - take the bus if need be- there is a brand new in the box throatless shear, 5 pieces of aluminum big enough for shields (seen the running/jogging signs?) and a duffle bag with at least 3 swords with basket hilts in it (I think). Call the VBC Public Affairs Officer - CW3 Prather at 822-3735 ( I THINK -lol it was my old number and I don't remember it! I'll try and check if its wrong). You are welcome to them. The Chief has the key to the cage they are in (right near the Sports Oasis DFAC) and tell him MAJ Short said you could have the stuff....

Please let me know if you get it or need more help. I'll email the Chief to let him know you might be contacting him.

Be safe,
Randy

WHat "huge press coverage"? You mean, "While ignoring their duties, American Soldiers dress up in tin foil and hit each other with sticks!"? Cause that's all the "press' is going to carry on this one.

SCA in the Military is nothing new.

I'd say when you are over there, "period" is a very distant second to "getting to play", personally.

Maeryk,

I agree. Just getting to play far outweighs period right now. I'm actually looking forward to strapping on some (Shudder) Pickle barrel and go out wailin'.

And for once I might (Maybe) be the best fighter at practice. But, then I get to be the primary teacher. I already know have to do some serious discussion about grappling and shield bashing. And I'm getting copies of the Bellatrix Manual printed out. If I start them off right, I might wind up with one or two badasses. If not Glean Abhann gets a host of 5-10 new fighters come Gulfwars after next.

Yeah Major, I agree. We're all busy as heck but over at Cropper we're doing "shift work" with our "guests". And I can only imagine how busy you guys were. And honestly anything to change up PT is a welcome distraction and I HATE Volleyball and they're considering cutting out Football (American style) since some knuckle-head broke his arm and his skull running into a T-barrier trying to be T.O.

I've spoke with the CO and the command is on board as long as it's "Safe". (I hate the new army.) I discussed the armor and the rules. And the fact injuries are pretty rare.

I live right across the street from a car wash--plasticbarrelland. I can probably send a couple of set of plastic gear for the body. Would that be ok?

Would monetary donations be of any assistance? I'm sure a bunch of AAers would be willing to make a donation. I know I would.

Perhaps there could be some sort of non-profit set up to purchase and deliver old SCA gear to the soldiers? Anybody know more about this sort of thing than me? (Very likely! )

Edited to add:

What about a booth/blanket at Pennsic? I'm sure a ton of fighters would drop off bits of old armor. The key would be to have some sort of accountability so that people will trust the dude going "Give me your old armor for free. I swear it is going to our soldiers overseas..."

Thoughts?

I cut and pasted the wording that went along with the pics. I assume no responsibility for how it is percieved. I copied the text as description purpose only. There is no hidden meaning by me whatsoever.
I re-read the fisrt portion of it and see how it could be taken as a slight on the Marines. I took it as ribbing though. But then again I am a big dumb former Combat Marine myself. ;-)

Or.. maybe there was a hidden meaning in the above statement I just wrote.....Or, oh nevermind.

I would be very hesitant to accept monetary donations. By taking cash I turn this into a business. And that's just asking for problems. the folks on here that know me personally would probably say I'm 100% trustworthy unless you want me to hold your booze. :)

Seriously though, I'm just looking for the stuff no one wants.

Maybe when I get back I'll look intomake a clearing house for donated old bits of armour and make a website.

Thanks for the offer though, And I know the thought is in the right spot. I really apreciate it. I do.

Yeah.. okay. No harm, no foul then. The way I read it, with the italicized portions in mind, was "Insurgents are killing people, and all the Military does is play games!"

Perhaps I'm over sensitive.. I see how it could be taken the other way "Even though they live in danger daily, as war rages around them, our brave soldiers have time to cut loose a little bit and restore some sanity in their lives".. though I still think it was _intended_ as the former, not the latter.

However, had you provided the entire whatever that was cribbed from, it would have helped. :). It was kinda without context, you know?

(See? I'm glad I didn't flameON when I read that, and asked for clarification!)

Oh man. don't over-complicate stuff when it doesn't need to be.

SImple issue is: If you have old crap in a closet you don't (and won't!) need, put it in a box, get this guys address, and mail it.

"BODY ARMOR FOR OVERSEAS SOLDIERS!"

The way I'd handle this is for individual merchants who wish to participate to allow people to buy armor at a discount if the shipping address is the one mentioned in the thread (or for those who wish to make donations on their own pay full price and ship it there).

No cash changes hands except donor to merchant.

Sir,

My wife no longer fits into her Lorica Segmentata and is looking at a new late period breastplate so I will ask her tonight about sending it your way. If the answer is yes it will be in a box Wed morning. I will also ask the fighters at practice tonight for any items that they want to send.

Thank YOU SIR and stay safe.

"now THAT is a hot lookin hat!!! "

Thanks Sixtus.
That kit development was a long row to hoe.
I think it has a particular personality and its name Carlos fits quite well.

The guys gave it a nick name of Spangenstein Frankenhelm but I just call it,
The Bastard Spangen.

I hope the boys can put it to use and have some good clean fun.

Now they could use a bundle of rattan sticks. Yes?
Perhaps they would fit in one of the Fed-Ex triangle long shipping boxes.
Any stick vendors interested?

Sir,

I put out a call today at Caid's CP prize tourney for armour. I felt that what you are trying to do should be awarded and well doggone it I found the SCA while in and had a hell of a time affording my gear and the least we can do is send you some of our unused armor.

I am collecting armour for you from all of Caid until August 1st and the populace of Caid has shown its generousity from the outset. I will post pictures in the am after my wife downloads em off of the camera but here is what was donated today.

One full set of Japanese style body armor (ABS) plastic with shoulders attached. One leather COP breast plate with mild steel plates (a lil rusty).
One purple gambeson with some rust stains but washed today. Promises of knee cops and elbows at fighter practice on Tuesday night. I have cut my rattan and will add 3 36" lenght single sword pieces. There were also 2 sets of knee pads donated and one household donated a strapped edged and painted shield from House Dragonwatch. (house of Marines that started outside MCAS Yuma.) The response from the populace was overwhelming and I have never met so many pointy hats in one day. Three of the Caidan Barons (all that were in attendance) have all stepped up and will be asking for armour from their populaces at their council meetings, and I can't count the number of times I gave out my email addy today.

I can send it out it bit pieces or all at once at the first of August let me know which you would prefer. Either way hopefully you will have enough gear to get your practice off the ground soon. Thank you Sir for putting your butt on the line for us and I hope this will remind you that although you are absent you are not forgotten. God Bless.

And for any of you in Caid that are lurking here that may have armour I will be at Gyldenholt Practice on Tuesday night, and Lyondemere Anniversary on July 19th with an empty box on hand waiting to be filled.

I challenge you all that while we live the dream and talk about service and give awards, the good Captain and his troops live a life of service truly everyday, so let that service not go unrewarded I beg of you.

Sgt Kelly
