Helmet Help

So, I tried my luck with a new (and local) armorer, and got burned in the process. My nearly 200 dollar investment turned into an ugly, rusty (though it was supposed to be stainless), ill-constructed, poor excuse for a roughly helmet-shaped paperweight. He doesn't have a website, and I certainly won't be going to him again. Lesson learned.
Anyway, with the venting taken care of, I'm looking for an armorer to make a helmet for me. I've been browsing about the internet for a good hour or two now, and I'm not finding much.
I'm not looking for anything incredibly spectacular. The basic idea is a sugar-loaf helmet with a brass cross that runs down the center and around the eyes, and a couple of crosses cut out of the "cheek" areas for ventilation. I was thinking about blackened, mild steel for the helm (is it possible to blacken stainless?)
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
~William
P.S. - I'd really like to keep the cost below 400 dollars (am I kidding myself or is that feasible?)

William!
If you change your title to "WTB helmet", more armourers will drop by.
Cheers,

William, I just left a review of Otto's Armoury, and the helm I just got from him for right around there....you can see his work here:http://www.ottosarmoury.com/
He does great work for that price range as well as Hjalmr, he should be here on the archive. Check out Stonekeep armory too...
Both Otto and Hjalmr are extremely friendly, honest, and great at communicating. You save a bit by getting a helmet that is not completely polished off to the very finest detail, but the advantage is the speed, price, quality and ability to do just a touch of customization yourself without a ton of armoring skills, which for me was a HUGE plus....
Just a suggestion...

I have this helmet that I am looking to get rid of.
http://steel-mastery.com/index.php?&mod ... duct_id=20
The one I have is stainless and it has the brass cross that you can see in the pictures.
It also comes with some butted chain attached on the inside to look like you are wearing a coif. It is just a little small on me (I have a 24in head). Brand new you are looking at around $900 without shipping. I am asking for $500 (which is what I paid) and the thing is still brand new (NEVER had anything done to it and NEVER fought in).
Also you can get it soon because I don't have to make it or ship it from overseas.
You pay standard shipping and I will have it in the mail the day of or the day after I receive payment. I am not sure how thick the steal is (it is thicker than all my other helms and definitely SCA legal.
PM me if you're interested.

I can do that for you. The crosses will cost extra but you can see my sugarloaf on my website. I've got a fairly long backlog at the moment though.
Make sure to ask for reviews here on any armourer before you buy.
It is possible to blacken stainless. I don't have the stuff to do it though. It requires a fairly large investment to get started with it. Blackened mild I do all the time and is a standard option on my site.

William.
$400 should fetch you a very nice and sexy sugarloaf. I pretty much stick to making munition grade helmets and can make you a welded sugarloaf like you want for about $80 + shipping. However it sounds like you want a nice upper class helmet. I have a pretty short list at the moment and could probably get the sugar loaf to you in about 2 weeks or so. Just let me know...
You can see some of my work here:

I am curious to know if you can post a pic of this other helm you recieved??
