WTS: Roman-style Subarmalis

Post by talaananthes »

Hi,

I have a custom subarmalis (edit: sorry, for those unfamiliar, this is basically a Roman version of a gambeson) made for my by LaWren's Nest. It's three layers of light, worsted tunic wool for padding covered on both sides with a white linen shell, with shoulder doublings of the same construction, but covered in black linen for contrast.

The problem is, it's too big for me, and they don't take returns on custom items. I can't wear it, so I'd like to try and get it to someone who can and will.

It's 25 inches wide, and I guess it might fit well around a 44 to 46 inch chest, although I'm by no means an expert about such things. My chest is about 38 inches, and it feels like wearing a tent. It could also be recut to fit a smaller person, but I don't have the time or skills to do that myself. In any case, I'd probably recommend taking out the side seam and lace it up the sides instead.

It's 28 inches long, which makes it fall to about the hips on a person 6' tall, like myself.

It does not have pteruges.

This is their stock photo of their 1-layer linen subarmalis:

Mine is the same pattern of construction, but with a thicker body. I don't have a camera, so I had to take photos from my phone, sorry about the bad quality.

This is the specific item for sale:

I paid I think $140 plus shipping back in December, have not worn it except to try it on, I'll sell it again for $70 plus shipping.

"is this sodomy?" Tom asked, half in Ernest

Yes. Basically a Roman version of a gambeson. Something like this would have been worn under the several types of lorica, the body padding makes this fairly appropriate for use under maille but it could go with other armours as well.
