Parachute Cord 550

Post by Katil »

Where's the best place to get Parachute cord 550?

And approx how much does one need for a suit of Lamellar?

I'm using Drx from Calontir Trim's fluted plates...he wasn't kidding about some assembly required...

Thanks!

I can't really help you, but have you tried using the search function? I think I remember there being a thread about this not that long ago.

Look up Military Surplus, that's usually where you'll find it.

Guys,

As a side note, there is a type of cord called "650" which is slightly different in build but externally identical. It is cheaper and comes in many more colors than the "550" cord.

Check 650 cord on Ebay.

Good luck!

So far these folks have done well for me. But for the love of God please skip the neon paracord :D

check with other people in the area paracord in whatever form is useful to have. Most suppliers have discounds on shipping for larger orders.

how much should I buy???

Post by Katil »

Thanks for the sources Gents!!!
Next:
Are we talking a hundred, hundreds, or thousands of feet??
I know there are variants but even an approx would help. I don't want too little and hopefully I won't need to re do it for many yrs so I don't want half a spool left either...
Thanks

Katil,
Depends on how much lamellar you have. :D
A couple hundred feet should take care of it.
Order more to have extra if you are ordering an odd color.

Most army surplus stores have black if that is what you were looking for.
There has to be an army surplus somewhere in Memphis.

200' good?

Post by Katil »

Thanks Big John,
The Army Surplus I've shopped at since childhood closed and I was told all area ones had closed (most have) but I did locate one just outside Memphis in Collierville just now. He has the cord in hanks of 100' feet is that okay or do I need it all in one huge piece?? seems like I'd be cutting it to lace anyway for each row maybe, but not sure never made it before. Again, thanks for making me recheck I'd rather buy and support my local stores if possible and I can get it this weekend--YEA!!!
Katil

So 200' should be good? Right? I've got 250 plates not sure if I've got too many or not enough of them either...lol kinda blind on this project--all new to me wwhheeeee!!! I just hope it's not the nightmare like dude said...but my suit of brig I made lasted for 20 yrs plus so it's time for a new look. Wish me luck and I'm so glad to have yalls support and quick answers. Yall Rock!

Go with 300 this will leave you with lots of extra but it has more uses then halbers Railroad spikes.
Tying off the cord every 10-20 plates helps cut down on when a bit of cord goes bad.

Katil,
You should be ok with 250 plates, not sure which size you have but you should be fine. My lamellar has 235 if I remember correctly.

Yeah the 100' hanks will be fine grab a few to make sure you have enough and throw the rest in your repair kit.

I've heard several folks say to pull the white strings out of the center of the cord, somehow it helps keep the metal plates from chewing the cord.

I didn't do that on mine and I have to patch it from time to time.

Not sure if it works or not.

When I was lacing mine I used cord in arm span increments.
(finger tip to fingertip, for me roughly 6')
It's much easier to pull 6' through the plates vs. 20'

Once you get rolling with the lacing it goes pretty quick.
Should be able to lace it in a weekend working steady.

I bought mine from the supply captain, bought a full roll. Now I find a lot of uses for paracord. Both with the armour and other stuff.
