...ducis mathei (sic)

In the center, a lion, statant.

Obviously, the Seal of Robert, brother to Duke Matthew.

Anybody got a clue to which Robert, which Matthew?

Or what the heck it is doing on a plastic button????

Okay, Robert, brother to Mathieu of Lorraine...

Seems to have died 1176, but his shield, at least, bore an eagle armed with a sword - at least according to the fuzzy source I found.

Anybody got anything more?

From the City of Florange official web site (Google translation)

In the 12th century a castle was built in Florange. Robert de la Marck founded the branch Florange-Lorraine.
The Lordship is one of the most important of Lorraine and the fortress is one of the most formidable in the region of Thionville.

Not sure if Robert de la Marck is the same Robert...

Thanks, Blaine! Really cool information.

Now, for the 64 livre question: what the heck is it doing on a set of plastic buttons that my wife found in a large mixed bag in an antique mall?

Curiouser and curiouser...
