Can someone point me towards what might have been used as emblishment on tunics during the 13th century in Germany?

I realize that is a huge time period, so any and all would be awesome.

Thank you in advance.

Here's one example: Ludwig IV (d. 1227) has what appears to be a sea shell on his garment. I suppose it is an element of his heraldry?

It is a symbol of having gone on Crusade.

Is there somewhere I can read more about that? I found that the scallop symbolizes pilgrimage to Compostela and later pilgrimage in general, but nothing about Crusade.

You are probably right, I'm probably adding more to it than it means.
