I wonder what kind of discount I could get since it appears to be a Victorian creation? What right handed fencer (note scabbard position) carries a buckler in the right hand? The carving is fairly sophisticated, one would think a good carver had seen someone fence and wouldn't make such a mistake. I call hijinx.

There are actually a few things about the piece that make me question its origin however that wasn't one of them and still isn't. That is the kind of thing that could happen at either time and I even just went and checked and there is a misericord in Chester Cathedral with a man holding a buckler in the right hand, along with a hand and a half sword in the same hand.
So for a variety of other reasons I wouldn't be surprised if it turn out to be Victorian, that isn't one of them.

Is it unusual that it is carved from oak? I don't know a whole lot about medieval wood figures, but all I recall seeing were carved from lime wood.

There is nothing about this piece that feels Victorian to me.

Fruit woods are seen further south but in England if it wasn't oak it would be suspect.
Tasha no doubt knows more about that period than I do which cuts more of my problems.
If I had the money I'd buy it without hesitation. Even if it is Victorian its still a nice piece.

Ernst, I think we're seeing a heavily stuffed gambeson, not pteruges. The shorter garment on top appears to be a coat-of-plates, judging by the cut, blue paint and the scalloped edge. I suspect it's a good generation older than 1380.
