The Armour Archive

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya has a huge digital catalogue of very high resolution images on line!

There are 1000's of great paintings, sculptures, and many many other objects.
I have only looked through the first 20 pages of the Medieval Gòtic collection.

Some very interesting details on this St. Michael also:
• A mail fauld in an otherwise complete plate harness
• Apparent details (hard to tell) of arming points lacing his legs to a red coat, seen through the hip slits in the mail
• Arming points at the side of the poleyn, in the manner of floating elbows (even though it's shell-articulated)
• Curious boxed stop-ribs (?) at the tops of the cuisses

Martyrdom of St. Julian (?), lower right: check out the greaves. The one behind looks like anime construction, the other in the foreground, lamellar; and what's up with the "dewlap" at the knee of the white hosen?

Look at the guys on the bottom left and right as well.

As for the white hose with knee flaps these are probably houseaux.
Bob Charrette educated us about them in another thread.
I also posted a few more examples there.

Aha- the u-shaped cuts in the leather of the hoseaux are to allow flexibility at the knee, I would guess. Neat.

The white greaves in the right corner of the St. Vincent piece might represent quilted defense- I've seen this same sort of "brickwork" pattern in 14th century arming hose (Bibl. St-Genevieve, ms 0777)- except that the one on the far right has a distinct (rolled?) edge overlapping the shoe. The red and brown versions on the left side also seem rigid, maybe tooled leather or some sort of raised textile treatment over metal?
