Varengles

Post by Ernst »

1266 Inventory of Odo of Burgundy, Count of Nevers
xi varengles nueuves;
11 new 'varengles'?; (Nicolle gives as 'varaingle' and proposes part of horse-harness.)

1333, Jean II de Chalon, Count of Auxerre
Item xii vareingles garnies et quatre pièces neuves de fiz de vareingles longues.
Item, 12 garnished vareingles, and 4 newly made pieces of long vareingles.

Spanish? virar inglés = English tack

Apparently for horses. Anybody have any clues for a French base word? The closest thing that has come to mind were martingale straps, but the etymology is uncertain. A search interestingly also brought up farthingales, but the root verde doesn't seem right.

I was thinking of some of René d'Anjou's cane backed tournament "bumpers" for the horse.

I'm stumped on this word.
ferrum ferro acuitur et homo exacuit faciem amici sui
