Need help dating this armour harness.

Post by Fergus »

Hail to all you Historians,
Hey guys I have recently purchased a helm from Iron Monger Armoury and a set of chain maille armour from White Mountain Armoury. I have posted the pictures. What I'm interested in finding out is a time period that the real armour equivalents would have fit in. I will be adding splinted leather vambraces with a two lame winged elbows and matching splinted legs with a four lame winged knees. I was thinking somewhere between 1300 and 1400 century Scottish mercenary, but what other time periods and cultures would this fit into. I would appreciate any help you guys could supply. What shape shield with would work with this harness and time periods? Heater, Coffin, Wankle, Round?

Here is the chain maille set:

Here are the elbows:

I'd say around 1350-1375, England or northwest Europe would be a safe bet..Otto

Well... The mail is a usable in a large period of time. The elbows are generic SCA (too shallow and not pointed enough for period)and the helmet is later 14th century.

about 1350 for your time period, But if you want a Scottish merc persona, I would go for a "Bonny Scotish Bonnet" or scottish burgonet. they were extremely popular with mercs at that period.

I wasn't aware that burgeonets were in use that early, I think of them as more 16th & 17th C.
