The new pavilion

Post by Edric »

I got this pavilion from someone who was moving and needed to get rid of stuff. I paid $300 +$55 shipping.

http://www.edricsrose.com/unusedpics/pavilion/

It is a square pavilion with flared walls. (on a side note, I was wondering if anyone had any references for them being used in period)

I was told it was 14' tall at the peak and 6' tall at the walls. When I got it the 2 poles which lash together to form the center pole were clearly marked 5 1/2'. This could have just been confusion on the part of the seller. In any case it did not make me regret buying it. The walls are indeed 6' and the width is about 14' at the top of the walls.

It came with nylon ropes and flimsy aluminum tent pegs to peg the walls down. These will be replaced with manilla ropes and forged iron stakes. The stakes were heavy duty rebar forged to a n shape with about 4" extra. I will be keeping these and using them for the ropes.

The material is a light gray canvas and is dirty although there appears to be no mildew whatsoever.

I wanted to paint some stripes on it to dress it up and help seal the seams, but it is pretty dirty and I can't think of an easy way to clean it. I am open to suggestions. I imagine it will have to be re-treated after I wash it.

All things said I am satisfied with my purchase. The thing was made to fit in a car smaller than mine, so travelling with it will not be a problem. The canvas is heavy duty and in great shape. The poles came with it. A pre cut blue tarp came with it, and I plan on making a floor cloth to go over it with a military surplus tarp I have or with some sunforger canvas since the tarp is not large enough. Waste of sunforger though.

That style is often termed a mitered square marquee tent, the term pavilion being more commonly used for round tents. Let me quickly add that I don't know if that terminology is authentic or no.
Single peaked square marquee tents are not common in period art. I know 'cause I went looking for the same as one of my tents is a similar construction. I did manage to find a couple of examples for the late medieval period---but don't ask me to quote them as I have long since forgotten where I came across them.

What ya got is a Regent that was made by either Panther Primatives or 4 Season tentmaster.
I've got a 12x12 (8x8 at the eaves)Regent on order from Panther. To date I have not been able to find an example of one in period.
For info on cleaning try Dragonwings pavilion site: http://midtown.net/dragonwing/previous.htm
I would change the stakes to 18" 3/8 sq bar stock. Bend over the top couple ov inches as a hook. Check out Panthers site for any extras you might want:
pantherprimatives.com

Good luck

No actually it was custom made for the person I bought it from. It was designed so it could be set up by 2 people because she was single and the poles were designed so they could fit in her Grand Prix without taking up too much space.

I did also recieve the left over canvas still on the roll which I may end up using to make the ground cloth.

I am probably going to stick with the rebar stakes for the ropes because I really like the design of them, there is enough room to have the curled end go in the ground a few inches to keep them from twisting, and still have room to get a hammer/hatchet under it to pull them out of the ground pretty easy.

My dad is into civil war reenacting and he is getting me some of the square stock 12" stakes at an event this weekend to use for tacking the walls down. Nothing more than that should be needed since this just gets the tent more taught and the ropes do most of the work of keeping the tent up.

You know, if you kind of lean your head a bit this way and look at it cross-eyed, it sort of looks like a round with flared walls. Image

Hey, it's better than a nylon earth pimple.
