14th Century Garb

Post by Sevrin le Sanguine »

Hello.

I'm looking for documentation, patterns, pictures, and inspiration regarding clothing suitable for a French nobleman circa 1370.

I would like to thank Vitus for being a motivational speaker on this topic.

I don't know how reliable this book is, but I adore looking at it-
"Medeival Costume and Fashion" by Herbert Norris. It's got some really neat drawings.
I also like "Fashion in the Age of the Black Prince"- because it documents the Youthquaker fashions of the 1300's.
Hey Gwen, since all of the extremely tight and short clothing was favored by the teenagers, what did adults and middle-aged folks wear? Longer and more sedate versions of the popular fashions? I wonder, because I am probably too old to go about with my braies showing....

Thank you. One of these days I'll manage to introduce myself to you at an event. You presided over my initial authorization at Christmas Tourney 12/01/01.

OK, Here's my short not-even-close-to-comprehensive list for 1370 Image:

Gwen, what type of split hose? I am into the years 1370-1420...
What else can I wear besides regular chausses and braies?

Vitus, I'll look around and see if I can find you a picture of what I mean. It may take me until Monday, as I'm pretty much useless with the computer and will probably have to get Jeff to help me post something.

Flonzy, if you're on a budget, I'd say start with Payne and use all the free art that's available on the web for further research. Payne covers Roman-20thC. It's an old textbook and the best general history book of the lot IMO. There have been several others published in the last couple of years which are slick and glossy but not nearly as good (again in my opinion.) I'd be happy to review them here if you'd like.
