Vervell question

Post by gmandragora »

A friend of mine wants to put vervells and a camail on a helm that looks like a barbute. An SCA barbute w/bargrill, looks like a bascinet with an exagerated pointed flair on the back.

Is this helm historical? I mean beside the bargrill. Can it be made to look historical?

I haven't seen a barbute done that way, is there a historical example?

If it has a Corinthian face- no.
If the top is rounded- no.
If the top is pointed, then it could pass for a Chalcis-type helmet.

Rather than let him mangle this helm, can you convince him to wear a maile coif under it?
This article has some of the images Vitus was refering to:

Bear in mind, the work is mostly by Venetian armourers. Relatively little work of their ilk survives in museums because it's unusual in a less than masterful way.
It's very rare to see anything with such a "barbute" feel having vervelle holes.
