Good Experiences??

Post by sarnac »

In order to give fair and equal time...I have decided to post a completely opposite topic...

When have you ever been praised or told how spiffy you look when wearing period Garb/armour/shoes......whatever..

For me is was when I was a Squire and one of the Dukes in our Kingdom who does his persona to close to Living History levels in every thing (garb, armour, camp etc...)
pulled me aside to ask me about the new full lamellar harness I was wearing.
After I gave him my rundown about the new kit, he told me "Its very nice to see you putting so much effort into your armour. You quite possibly have the nicest looking kit out here today. Keep it up."
It was a wonderful moment for me and helped push me in the right direction.

I still, to this day, get compliments on my appearaance on the field and get the "Man I wish I could look that spiffy...."
Which is my cue to strike up a conversation on how (with little money and some effort) YOU CAN!!!

I answer here also for fairness. I have received lots of compliments on the garb I have been making. I have received them from people I have never met before when I got to events. My friends have been inspired to become more authentic because of my jump up in authenticity. Hopefully when I become more active in the SCA others will want help in jumping up their quality.

I have received a number of compliments on my fighting kit and on my garb. I have started to follow up these comments with a question. "Would you like me to mail you the pattern, or give you some reference sources?" So far this year I have mailed out a pattern for my fighting lentner to four people and have two more on my waiting list, I have to get enough paper bags from the grocery store to cut them out. Sarnac raises an important issue, people really appriciate an effort. They are also willing to make this effort themselves they just lack the sources to do things right.

Take the time to follow up a compliment with an offer to share what you have done. Do not do a hard sell, just make the offer.

It made my day when one of my friends came up to me and said "Wow, you look just like that Hogenberg print!" Proves how much of a geek I am, yes, but also made me feel pretty spiffy about my 1580's kit.

I've gotten compliments on my garb several times, especially my dagged angel wing tunic. Think the best moment i had at crossroads was when i guy i was talking to turned to his wife and said "Honey, i really like this tunic he's wearing, hint, hint".

It is fun to have the news wanna talk to you, and have the little kids want their picture made.

There are the accasionaly people who really wanna talk to ya.

My biggets thrill was at Gulf wars 8 i think.

I went to the Silver Swan pas and as i was armouring up a lady asked to take my pic.

She said "Master Roberto asked me to get pics of people in full harness that looked good."

I was all WOW Roberto's gonna see my rig.

Then came hope he doesn't laugh to much.

Sternfield has always been very complementary of the kit I've showed up for. I had to ask them to disqualify me from period campsite competitions because I didn't want to discourage others who were trying really hard. Plus not being a member and having what could be argued as a "commercial" campsite. (Athough we don't actually make any money...)

When I had first moved to this Kingdom, I went to an event over the New Years weekend, and I armored up in my armouring tent, and had my weapons out on a stand with my shield etc. So I was not seen until they called out for inspection,, and when I came out there was a lot of pointing and looks as I came out in the suit of big scales, vendal helm w face work and raised work greaves...

One of my apprentices who was on the side line said a lot of the ladies in the gallery thought I was a Duke or such from out of Kindom..
and they did for a while as they do not call out titles etc here in the tourneys and the King and Queen called me up to the thrones to ask who I was and about my rig, saying is was quite the impressive piece of work,,

I think the coolest praise I've ever had was when I heard some people saying I always looked like I had just walked off a manuscript page. I got laureled like 6 months later.

Overheard by one of our friends as our fully armed and armored crew marched off the Fyrdraca at the Celtic-Scandanavian Festival in Baltimore:

"My God; they've emptied the prisons!"

(That was the day I discovered that my calculations were right, you really could carry 24 armored Vikings on the Fyrdraca without foundering... at least across Baltimore harbor. Image )

Just this past weekend, a lady I passed asked to take my picture, and added, "You look totally Rennaissance, sir!"

I was also introduced to a newbie as "Pietro, who aspires to be the prettiest fighter on the field." (Reply: "Oh, no, my lady - I stand no chance as long as you're in armor too..." Image)

After a school demo, one of the kids saying "y'all look so REAL!" and overhearing a little girl saying to her friend "I wish MY mom could build armor - that's cool!"

Kids can be terrific!

I was at the 1st Highland Games held on Okinawa, Japan with the local SCA group. I was wearing a full on kilt from the era before they were called great kilts. (I can't remember the name) I was walking to my car when this Scottish gentleman stopped me and said that aside from another guy that was wearing a Scottish military dress uniform with kild and all, I was the best looking there. He then asked for a picture with the both of us together. Image
I thought that was great. I get all sorts of compliments when I wear it. Too bad I'll have to stop wearing it since my persona isn't Scottish.

When I first started attending SCA functions, I had a brown and saffron skited doublet from the early 1500's. I had not successfully gotten my (crappy newbie) armor together, I was that new. But it was a most excellent Doublet.

I attended a Demo at a local church, and as folks were lining up to do their part, Duke Sir John the Bearkiller came up and said

"Freiman, I want to marshal the field today with a bunch of the Marshals."

I told him that I was not a marshal, and though I had "some armor" I was not a fighter yet.

He replied that it really didn't matter. I would be working between the eric and the peril, and thus would not be very close to his hand picked demo fighters. He said that there would be four warranted marshals on the field.

Then he said "That's a great looking doublet, and my wife saiys that the ladies will like looking at your legs in those tights more than they will like the fighting"

I nursed that set of compliments for months.

The first event I went to in my transitional plate (basic suit from illusion armory). The inspecting marshall was distracted and didn't notice me until I was standing in front of him. He looked up, rocked back on his heels and said, "yeah, like I'm going to fail that."

Many good experiences.
The best?
Seeing the look on Sir Cedric the Just's face watching his son run around in the stainless pikemans plate I made for him.

Wait, that was second best......

The best was the look on the his SONS face when he realized he actually had his OWN steel armor, and it was way nicer than his dads kit.....(grin)
