Provisions, Standards and Objectives

Membership and Insurance
Due to insurance considerations Markland is offering a $5 temporary membership for all of our medieval reenactor guests and former Marklanders who wish to participate in any of the battlefield activities, whether reenactment fighting or fratricidal combat. There is no fee for any registered group or participant for just attending or assisting with any other aspect of this event.

Clothing Standards
All participants involved in battlefield events are expected to meet the basic Marklandic clothing standards [http://www.markland.org/basicgarb.php]. Participants in static or educational displays, or merchants and vendors may, at their option, wear modern civilian clothing as long as it's tasteful. (And I, and the museum staff, decide what's tasteful.) Medieval clothing of the Conquest period is strongly encouraged [further information and links at: http://www.larp.com/midgard/ ].

Later (pre 1492) reenactors are welcome as well; and will, of course, meet the standards of their individual camps.

Xena and Conan need not apply.

All frat fighters, besides their regular combat and safety gear, are encouraged to rig themselves out for 1066, and if not steel qualified furnish themselves with proper recreation armor and weaponry of wood, leather, or other safe materials of historically accurate appearance. Steel Qualification
We strongly encourage all non-steel qualified members and participants to furnish themselves of weaponry of wood, leather, and other safe but realistic appearing materials that meet the "10 foot" rule. Those visiting participants who are previously steel qualified in their own group, or can demonstrate proficiency and experience at handling steel weapons MAY elect to try for Markland qualification. Our steel qualifiers and their chief (Wilhelm Greycloake) will be emphasizing safety; and qualification will be at their sole discretion. All steel and non-steel weaponry and all armor, safety equipment, special routines and projectile weaponry will be subject to their inspection and approval for all battlefield events.

Fratricidal Combat
The chief frat reeve and staff will conduct all safety inspections and hold control of the battlefield during any frat events. Reeves hold ultimate power. [http://www.markland.org/rulesfrat.php]

Objectives
This will mark our 35th reenactment and commemoration of the Battle of Hastings, which we believe, makes this the longest running medieval reenactment event in North America. It is our intention to set a new level for both historical accuracy and participation for the 21st century and to provide a firm foundation on which to build further reenactment and living history events. We are also looking forward to the participation of other reenactors from across Canada and the United States.

We believe that this period in history, as well as the entire medieval period, is crucial to our understanding of how our present civilization came to be. As an educational organization it is our duty, as well as our pleasure, to educate the public and help allay the common misperceptions of this period of history.

We are also grateful for the assistance of our host for the last several years, Marietta House Museum, and their encouragement in our mutual pursuit of history and education.

Lastly, we seek to promote good fellowship among all reenactors, Marklanders, medievalists and merchants. Let us exchange information and ideas for pour own education and enjoyment.

I'm there, fighting for the winning team. My first reenactment event, first time going to something with authenticity standards, steel weapons, and a consistent timeframe for most of the participants. I'm really looking forward to it.

I was going but then changed my mind due to the fact I heard you had to be a paying member to fight with steel so I backed out.


Then Brodir had talked me back into going (he explaned the temp membership thing) again.

But before I let the wife know my plans were back on she planned a trip to Georgia to see some of her friends she hasnt seen in 10 years.

So it looks as if I am back into "Not Going Mode" again;(

Why do rec fighters have to pay when frat fighters don't have to pay a dime at any frat fights like fall War, etc. Since when does Markland care about History? I guess I won't be going.

Tanc, I will pay your $5, if you'll come. I am not kidding. Markland has made giant changes to their policies in order to make this event as appealing to as broad a group of people as possible.

Thanks Brodir but it isn't about the money. I was a member since 1985 and tried on many occasions to get a pay to play rule done but it was always quashed. Now, at a LH event they want to charge. Never did it at a frat fight.

If you read carefully you will note that this is for ANY "battlefield" activity, including FRAT! This was not my idea, but something that developed out of the Summer Althyng. I'm just trying to keep the show on the road. Next year I'll let the new Hastings committee worry about it.

There is even a chance that the requirement may disappear; but I'd rather let people know that they may have to pay some temporary dues ahead of time than spring it on them at the event.
