saex sheath leather work

Post by Halvgrimr »

on another list greenshield was asking about tooled designs on saex sheaths.

i put these two scanned articles up for him and thought they may be of interest to some of you all too:

http://www.missouri.edu/~winsloww/archives/leather_stuff/Late_Saxon_leather_sheaths_from_Gloucester_and_York/

http://www.missouri.edu/~winsloww/archives/leather_stuff/Viking_Sheaths_of_Leather/

grab the scans if you want them, i will be taking them down in a few days

Sweet. Thanks, Halvgrim. I am actually looking to buy a saex, well, when the reign isn't sucking my funds down. I was hoping to tool the sheath myself.

Are you coming down to Diamond War?

Not quite - depends on route. Ask Colin, he knows it by heart.

We will be there Friday lunchish. With the impending reign, we can't afford to take Thursday, too.

Back on topic - do you know if sword scabbards were similarly tooled? My scabbard has deteriorated completely and I am about to replace it.

--this is really all the info i have on the subject.

i have gathered some limited (untranslated) data on some of the Valsgarde/Vendel sword/saex scabbards but that is probably to early for your purposes and as i stated its inconclusive at this time

Thanks again Halgrimr. I'll post some pics of the scabbards when they are finished.

--No problem
You Normans need all the help you can get when it comes to 'seeing the light' of Viking ways Image
