I'm sure this qustion has been asked a thousand times, but where is a good place to get wool and linen online with acceptable weaves and colors?

For linen: www.fabrics-store.com

This place has the best and most consistent linen prices I have been able to find in a variety of colors and weights.

Check out this article by Kass McGann on tips for the right weight linen for your project: http://fabrics-store.com/first.php?goto=ec&menu=ec&mn=tm&m=therightstuff

Thanks, that's a great site. It has already wreaked havoc on my checking account!

Medievalist-friendly, if you tell her what you're trying to make she can help with suggestions of what she has in stock that's appropriate.

Thanks for the "ad", Gwyneth! Now I'm going to have to think up a medieval topic to write about for next month's article. =)

Yay! Maybe something about the 14th century since that's my current area of interest? Image And, you are very welcome - I brag on you and Gwen all the time.

Here's another link, this time to both linen and wool (and whatever else you might want). Don't know how good this one is, but it seems a little pricey in general - but anything over $8/yard seems pricey to me. http://store.yahoo.com/phoenixtextiles/

And here's another *very* pricey place, but it has a good selection and a voluminous bargain bin. http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/home/index.cfm

phoenixtextiles.com and trimfabrics.com

Both have great prices (on wool), and good service.

Phoenix textiles is also found at www.fabric.com. Actually, their prices on wool and linen are quite good. $10 a yard for coat-weight felted wool is an excellent price.

www.fabrics-store.com for linen.

www.dharmatrading.com or www.silkconnection.com for silk.

On cost - don't skimp. If I spend $6 a yard on 4 yards of decent linen, that's only $24 for a chemise I will get years of decent wear out of. Ditto if I think in terms of $40 for a nice wool gown. Spend more, make less and nicer.

About the same as at Dharma Trading - less if you buy by an 11-yard bolt. They only carry black or white, but I dye them myself anyway.

Dharma also carried hemp fabrics.

Read their site first - I am not sure they take walk-ins. I think they are phone, web, or mail-order only.

For hemp, go to hemptraders.com , hemp is a stteply priced fabric (wonder why?) but you can catch good deals on thier "closeouts page"

9-12 bux a yard for hemp canvas is just rockin.
