question bout sewing and some undergarments

Post by Benalishlancer »

Was working on a few last minute thing (15th cent. braies and an undershirt), and ran into a couple questions.

1) What exactly is an exposed seam, and for these two projects, where might they be?

2)What would be the proper stitching to join it all together?

An exemple of an exposed seam would be a hem. The stich you use to sew the hem is visible on the outside of the garment. The stich used to join the front to the back is not visible and could be sewn on a machine.

A good sewing book, like the one Singer puts out, will have clear illustrations of the hem stich.

So the hem of the leg and sleave openings, the hem around the collar and the waist band would be hand stiched.

Sounds like you are reading some group rules where they want all visible seems hand stitched. Visible seems are ones like the cuff, hem, and neck of a shirt. A running stitch or a hem stitch like you see here work great:

If you are doing the seems where the pieces are joined you can do a tiny running stitch or a backstitch to make those and to finish the seem the French seem works well.
