X Post - 5c armour

I'm working toward making a better looking kit for SCA combat - and I'm getting stumped -
I'm looking for 5thc Ireland / Britan / etc... Here is what I have to work with -
I'm assuming hidden legs / arms, and I'm pretty sure I have this knocked. I know I don't have a lot of choice with hand protection except to be "creative".
Body armor is the trick -
I know maille is period, but at this time is cost prohibitive.
I've found refernces (some physical evidence and mostly from saga) for leather armor, scale and possibly lamellar. I've been wearing Noble Plastic plates and have been pretty happy - only complaint is they are a bit bulky (the plates seem a bit thicker than I like).
I am a better than average leather worker. My metalworking experience is pretty much non-existent.
I would rather avoid the whole "all I wear is a tunic" look if possible.
Ideas? References?
