French Manuscript- Legende De St. Denis

Post by Wil »

Looking around the ARMA site, I found this image-

http://www.thearma.org/essays/SandB/fre ... tDenis.JPG

Listed as an illumination from 'Legende De St. Denis', 1317, French. I'm curious if anyone has a larger shot of this scene, hopefully in color? I'm very interested in the bucklers with the scalloped bosses. If nobody has an online pic, perhaps a book recommendation?

Thanks in advance,

~Wil

Wil,

I've got several scans showing armor from the manuscript (BN Fr. 2090-2), unfortunately they are all black and white. I'll be glad to forward them to you if you like.

A couple of online color pictures are available. The first is on the Web Gallery of Art http://gallery.euroweb.hu
Just do a search for French manuscript illumination for 1317.
This will show you a scale clad kneeling figure with visored bascinet with a similar buckler. A second image is avilable from the BNF. http://expositions.bnf.fr/fouquet/grand/f634.htm
No buckler in the second image, but Sissinius' scale is nice.

Finally, one book is available on the market for $100-150. You can use http://www.bookfinder.com

The"Vie de St. Denis", Charlotte Lacaze, Garland Publishing, NY, 1978(9?) ISBN 0824039572

Hope this helps.
