Historical Bellydancing Garb

Post by Mike F »

Now, people always ask questions, but no, this isn't for me. ;)

Does anyone have any place on line with some nice information about authentic (versus the usual SCA style) bellydancing garb. I aplogize for not knowing the name for it offhand. Patterns, of course, would be a plus, but any nice information would be welcome.

Thanks!

I talked to my wife this was the best she could come up with.

She said it's really hard to find documentation.

Is this for a particular country or region or time period? It's hard to know whether to point to a Ghawazee coat, or whether you're looking for something from Persia, Turkey, India, or whatever. :)

It looks like she's looking in the Turkish or Persian direction. Unfortunately, it really does seem there aren't a lot of real solid sources that we can find. Any suggestions on that as well?

Thanks, by the way. Everything has been very helpful so far.

Try looking up Persian and Turkish miniatures. Unfortunately the Persian dancing girls wear some very interesting (and not very attractive) head scarves. Beware about using 17th c sources, the styles change around then. Sometimes pottery have pictures. Unfortunately the prohibition of depicting human figures was held to fairly strictly in the middle east and there are limited early period examples. The late 14th c and later Persian and Turkish examples are easier to find.

As a note, I've never found any "under the bust" style gawazi coats in period. Try looking for:

Just do searches on "Persian Miniature Paintings". "Ottoman Turk Textiles", and "Mamluk Turk Textiles"
