14th C art ideas wanted

Post by Wyrm »

I have a drum and want to add a design to the face of it to cover the brand label, I could pull something out of a heraldry book but thought ppl here might have some better suggestions for designs covering it.

What area of the world are you looking to portray? Do you want it to look like *their* drums would have, or simply decorated with art in the style found in the 14th century?

Hi Garth, at this stage I just want to cover up the brand logo. I dont even know if it was historic to decorate drums this way. If anything English or French art of the 14th century. The drum I have doesnt exactly look like the drums I have seen used. It looks like a bodhrun (sp?). Anyway any suggestions welcome.

im sure a family crest or a personal coat of arms would be fine for something like that.. Otherwise, maybe looks at the borders on period manuscripts. Often times they contain "doodling" that may have some fun designs for you. Check the Book of Kells for gaelic designs.

Have a look at http://www.knighthospitaller.com/Manuscripts/index.htm and http://image.ox.ac.uk/show?collection=b ... =msbodl264 for some C14 decorative designs (careful - the second one contains very large pictures).

The Book of Kells dates to the 7th or 8th century AD, so it wouldn't fit with a 14th century use.

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.
