maille ventail on attached coif?

Slowly but slowly I'm nearly finished with my full hauberk. 17ga 1/4" links, butted because nice riveted maille from India was a pretty new idea when I started. The attached coif and ventail are finished except for the ties. I'm thinking of a leather browband sewen or laced through the maille and a simple cord to tie it up. Other ideas? I also have to decide on tying the ventail on the left or right. I've seen both illustrated, but I haven't noticed any trends. Is there a preference or reason for one side or the other?
I need to decide what the inside is before I can attach the mufflers with leather mittens. I'm also thinking of padding the inside of the ventail, possibly with the same leather I use for the mittens. It is a light garment weight soft leather. A cloth padding might not be as hot, though. The ventail come up just to my mouth so I can still talk at demos etc with it tied up. The padding would be mostly for comfort and keeping my beard from getting caught.
What are some good references for ventails? What experience do you have with them? I am primarily interested in 13th century western Europe.
