Helmet's time period

Post by Stephen du Bois »

When did the Bascinet become prevelant on the battlefield and when did the Spangen-helm fade from use? I'm look for approximate times(mid century X, early century Y). It was a general question from a friend mine and I need better information that what I have off the top of my head.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

About the middle of the 14th century is when the "standard" bascinet becaomes common. Non-kettlehat spangenhelms seem to have died out in the 12th century, IIRC. I know a lot more about 14th century armour than 12th, though.

I've done a fair bit of looking into this, and the latest representation I can find of a (non-kettlehat) spangenhelm is 1200, in a picture of King Stephen of England.

The kettlehats seem to have continued to be built as spangenhelms until at least 1250 (see Maciejowski Bible).

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.
