Sorry about the lack of information on the lady's effigy; I swear I thought I took a picture of the plaque describing it. How about that paint? :D

Nowers and the lady are from Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford.

Kingy and Wife are from Canterbury Cathedral. You know who the helm and coat armour belong to!

The dirty Norman is from Gloucester Cathedral.

Which Henry? The King or the archbishop?
The king should be obvious and something about the archbishop can be found here:
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03656a.htm

I'd like to point out, though, that the paintjob on the archbishop's tomb is Victorian.... not original...

Who's Henry? Read your Shakespeare . . BTW, is that Henry IV Part I or Part II in the tomb? (Shakespeare joke).

Only fair to point out that Robert of Normandy's effigy was made maybe half a century after he died, and the armour reflects this.

And there's the Black Prince's armour (what's left of it!) - that quilted coat armour - is there any more information about it? I've never seen it before in all the pics of the achievements. The pic isn't clear enough to tell, so is the fabric cover patterned?

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.

Egfroth,

have a look here: www.forest.gen.nz/Medieval/articles/gar ... rince.html and there is also a great article by Janet Arnold in Church Monuments, the Journal of the Church Monument Society, VIII, 1993, pp 12 - 24 called "The Jupon, or coat-armor, of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral". I'm reasonably certain you can get it ILL in Oz, but if not, I could bring it over in December.... let me know.

I've just been to Canterbury and had a look at it....... the pattern is embroidered.

Cheers,
