Katzbalger

Post by Gottfried »

Hi all
I know this is not really an armour question but I thought maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.
How do I go about constructing a Historical Sword Scabbard for a Katzbalger?
How do I construct a Scabbard?!? I have no clue!
Oh and incase anyone is wondering.
A Katzbalger is a type of Sword used by Landsknecht in the 16th century. Main characteristics are that it is relatively short and wide.

Here is a good picture of one

One thing I noticed about Katzbalger's is the flare at the base of the hilt. It seems to me, that they would make a 'standard SCA Belatrix grip' oh so effective... 8)

here's a couple of sources for swords

http://www.armor.com/sword149.html

http://www.lutel.cz/

when you say historical scabbard I assume you're refering to a wooden core covered in leather, if that is the case here are several links for how-to's.

http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Wea ... StepBy.htm

http://www.florilegium.org/files/COMBAT ... s-msg.html

so it's basically just carving two shells to fit armourd the blade, and putting leather over it. it takes some time but the results are worth it and you save a load of money.

another way to make one is out of all leather possibly even harden the leather.
i'll try and find a link for how to make leather scabbards.

hope this helps you,

Aaron

On the Katzbalger, I have no really good sources, BUT, where did you find that site?

I would really Like to get more information on the pavaise on that page. As an Artilleryman, I have this major thing for Saint Barbara, and I have been looking for information on St. Barbara Pavaises...

Anyone?

Well I’m not sure how the Katzbalger scabbard was constructed. I have this picture and one in a German Weapons photo lexicon (haven’t gotten around to scanning it) and all I can say is that the outside is leather and at the end of the scabbard (were the tip would be) there is a Metal U as an End piece.

Thanks for the links

I really cant remember were I found the site, all I can say it was probably wile looking for Landsknecht stuff or Museums to visit but it has been a long wile since I found it.
You could try contacting the Museum. This is the info from the site
The Armoury of the dukes of Burgundy in the "Koninklijk Museum van het Leger en de Krijgsgeschiedenis" in Brussels
