1471 noble ladies dress

Post by Stefan ap Llewelyn »

Does anyone have any pictures of a dress matching the title that they could point me at, please?

I have a vague description of one that my wife would like made but need to get some pictures to show her to see if I have understood correctly before passing them on to a dressmaker.

Any help gratefully received!

Did she specify what geographic location? Fashions are different from one geographic location to another.

These are French/Flemish fashions.

Dirk Bouts (Dieric Bouts the Elder)

This one if from 1470-1475.

I'm assuming you're looking for northern Europe -- probably England -- right? (As opposed to an Italian noblewoman's dress of 1471, which is going to look very different.)
Some additional articles to check out: Burgundian Costume, Netherlandish Women's Clothing, and References for Burgundian costuming.

This might help:

This dress is the top layer, and should be worn over a supportive undergown, which is worn over a smock.

One theory on supportive undergowns of this period:

How to fit said supportive undergown:

Do you not know that in the service... one must always choose the lesser of two weevils?
