codpiece protection

Did the codpiece offer any real protection (compared to an unmodified fauld) or was it simply a fashion accessory?

Umm.. I'm thinking it might have been padding _for_ the fauld.
That said, I fought for YEARS with just a fauld. No cup. Never had a problem. Only time I ever got cupped was when I was wearing a cup and a spearman bounced one off the ground, and up into my cup. That sucked.

I'm not talking about the hidden cup worn by SCA fighters. I'm talking about the visible steel codpiece that was introduced to some plate harnesses. Does it provide more protection than an umodified fauld? Does it enable more flexibliity in the legs compared to an unmodified fauld? Does it have any practical benefit or was it simply an emulation of civilian fashion?

Right.. Okay. I thought you meant the typical fabric codpiece.
I think it was just more ostentatious.. a visual representation of "Mine's Bigger".

Yep, a visual representation of how "manly" you are.
Although have heard that the metal codpiece was removable thus making it easier to ride in full harness. A full fauld there would bounce on the Bow of the saddle. But I can't substantiate that.
