Anybody in Detroit? Help!

Post by James Arlen Gillaspie »

This harness is, I believe, the Siegmaringen armour. W. R. Hearst bought it, and it wound up in the Detroit Institute of Art. Dont' laugh; while the helmet, bevor, and tassets are a joke, there's lots of perfectly good Lorenz Helmschmid work here. The pauldrons, cuirass, and legharness are all by him. There's also the rest of the collection. We need more pic's! Can anybody help?

Yes, I am fairly certain that piece is at the DIA. Do you need more info anytime soon? I don't know when I will get down there next, but can certainly put it on the agenda and take pictures when I am there.

There are some great pieces in the DIA - including a stone effigy of a 14th century Italian Knight in carved cuir bouille!

Anytime is better than no time. Don't forget the backplate, if you can get at it! It's a good one. Helmschmid fans everywhere would deeply appreciate your efforts - as long as the photos are in focus!

P.S. Don't waste much time on the arms. I don't think they are real, anyway.

Okay - My wife and I have decided to make a date of it. We'll go next Friday night and I'll get the photos posted soon after that.

I would love to see photos of said effigy, if you have time.

Thanks,

I will get photos of every piece and some of the weapons collection if I can.

I've been trying to figure out who at the museum I need to contact to get a rubbing of the cuir bouille so that I can do a reproduction!

We are headed there next Friday, have an event all day Saturday and Mother's Day on Sunday. The pics will be up ASAP though.

Had some family medical emergencies come up this week that will prevent me from being able to get the photos this Friday.

Stay tuned though, I will get them. I've got a new tripod I've been itching to use...

Heads Up:

I got a ton of pictures from the DIA last night. The light started to fail and they were adamant that a tripod would not be tolerated, so we'll see what I got.

I'll transfer them later today and get them up online... :D

GREAT!!! Too bad about the tripod; it's nice that the Met NYC allows them on weekdays with a permit from the Information Desk.

I took 155 pictures. To my surprise, most of them came out in focus and showing the detail!

I captured them in a pretty large format so that they could be blown up and analyzed more closely. This is making it take forever to get them into Photobucket. I've uploaded the Lorenz Helmschmied and cuir bouille effigy. I'll try to get the rest up later this week.

Enjoy!

It's great to finally have a decent look at the old boy. I'd been wanting to get a better look at the pauldrons, and one can see that the poleyns had brass borders, perhaps like the 'Sigismund' gothic. THANKS! You would have done better with large pictures on Flickr.com, though. I've seen 'em roughly 3000X2000 pixels on there.

Thank you so very much. I simply love the tooling on the leather armour of that effigy. this will make a fun reproduction to make.

also I am noticing that his neck defence is a maille mantle type of defence. or is it just a coif that has been partially pulled down?

Thanks,

Aaron
