Camp presense question

Post by Kenwrec Wulfe »

In efforts to better my camp appearance, I am looking for a solution to the hanging of damp clothing that will fit with 14th century nobility on campaign.

Aside from a (hemp?) line, I cannot seem to find anything else. Was anything else used to hang clothing to dry?

Thanks for assistance...

A clothes line works just fine. The problem is that you don't want the line as part of your immediate presence.

I always hung wet clothes off of my tent guy ropes.

Kenwrec: What we run into here is the major issue with a lot of SCA encampments. Unless you are one BIG unit, you will have issues properly setting this up. Because in period, it was a _group_ who traveled together. Not 10 individual tents, each with their own microcosm, but one big group. There would have been a cooking area, barracks area, washing area, etc etc.

I think perhaps the answer you are seeking is one you won't be able to pull off "properly".

I always hang em _in_ the tent, if it's a warm enough day.. they seem to dry just fine that way.

That's what I was trying to say.

What a coincedence; I just started a linkspage on laundry.

You might also like to see some of the ways that clothing was hung over rods; there's some of that at http://larsdatter.com/sewingkits.htm (and also http://larsdatter.com/merchantbooths.htm and http://larsdatter.com/merchantstalls.htm too).

Can always count on you, Karen. :D Thanks!

Guy and Maeryk - I was hoping that was NOT the answer... :)

We just festoon the rigging with ours. Nothing like a set of clothes hoisted up on the halyard or dangling from the yardarm. :D

Kenwrec,

Valerius and I cheat and use the guy ropes and some clothes pins. :D Nobody notices, especially if you put it on the "back" or between your pavilion and your neighbor's.

We, um, deocrated the "Snow Fence" during a seige battle at Pennsic one year. Does that count?
