A couple of questions about Woolrich: your link sent me to the wholesale shop. Do you need a vendors license to but there (some store require it). And did you get any swatches from the Civil War section. If so, what were the weights like. I'm looking for some for a Norman outer tunic, and can't seem to find a good weight and color.

Hi Ancel....

I just email them for samples. Apparently you dont need a license if you buy in their 15 yard quantity.........which to reiterate can be in 5 yard segments of any color!

Now I note that Herts fabrics are listed

For wool there is only really one supplier I would use and thats Hainsworths fantastic stuff which you can leave raw edged BUT you do pay a price for it.

Let me know what youa re interested in and I'll pry lose some contacts

Andrew, since you're in Atlantia, I assume you've discovered Mary Jo's in Charlotte, N.C.?

Man, I really wish Sir's had a better web presence. Mistress Maudeleyn was there last week, and she picked me up a gold linen at .$60 a yard (yes, really), and several pieces of excellent wool and wool blends at $3.99 a yard, including a gold tropical weight that's so splendid I can't tell you.

Must make an effort to mag them to make their stock more readily available online.

Ah well Gwen......Im in DC....its a 7 hour drive to Charlotte, NC. Pretty far. Even with lower gas, its would factor into the cost per yard.

Thanks though...Im sure folks down that way can use that info.

We could collectively inundate Sirs with requests for a better website....I mean in this economy, its not a bad idea.

I'm looking for some super lightweight black linen. I'm familiar with the 3.5 oz linen that fabric-store.com sells. How does it compare to the hanky weight and lightweight linen from fabrics.com? ( I know I can order swatches and I will, but I thought someone here might have an opinion.)

Does anyone have a suggestion for a source for lightweight black linen that isn't on this list? Thanks!

How about nice, plain 100% cotton? It is period for some places/times (especially where I'm looking at...LOL) and I want something better than the crap from JoAnn Fabrics or something.

I had to add my favorites that weren't already on the list. Yes, you'll have to exercise some judgment and know what you're looking for, but you can get some screaming deals on stuff if you shop around.

This one was already mentioned, so another thumbs up for it!

I *adore* their handkerchief linen. It's beautifully smooth and tightly woven, far superior to Fabric-store's linen IMHO. The shipping is also free for internet orders. Yes the website is a bit clunky, but the fabric and prices make up for it.

I'd just like to add that we don't just stock woolens. We also carry hemp fabrics, cord and thread. We've also started carrying (as of late 08) excellent linen sewing threads, in white, off-white and a bunch of different colors,as well as the beeswax to coat them. Finally, we're also stocking metal bits I'm making: bronze hand-sewing needles, dress pins, hooks & eyes, and brass and bronze thimbles.

Note: You don't have to look at our stuff and wonder if it's historically accurate or not. If it isn't, we don't make or carry it. But if you're in doubt, just ask for the docs.

Id prefer to keep this thread clean of such plugs, thats not the point.

Try the classifieds....or a new thread. :)

Hemp canvas

Hemp rope & twine

Sewing threads - linen & hemp

Brewer, I can guarantee you my ladies in waiting and I will be in to buy that linen and hemp thread from you early in the week! We're bringing projects we're still working on with us, too!

GULF WARS STOP

If you're on I-65 headed for GW, and you're not traveling on Sunday a stop at Sir's Fabrics in Fayetteville, TN may be worth your while. I say may because the contents change weekly - some trips, I spend a ton, some, I spent $10.

But, generally it's worth it.

Two full stores, across the street from each other jsut off the main square. One is upholstery, faux fur (some that's excellent), upholstery leather and the like, one that's all apparel and drapery fabric.

It's worth hunting, I've found yard upon yard of dupioni on the "synthetics" table for $1.99 a yard.

Take exit 14 off 65, go east for about 10 miles right into downtown Fayetteville. You'll find yourself in the old courthouse square - go one block, and turn left following the public parking signs and you'll find yourself at Sir's.

Happy shopping.

Yeah, we already know Scott's getting all my money. Sigh.
