The Armour Archive

In a previous thread I made mention of the Southampton Record Series. It began in the early 1900s as the Southampton Record Society with the task to publish documents from the city archives as well as material on related topics. It is now run between the University and the City government with the same purpose. While the series covers all Southampton's history most of it is medieval and early modern period works.

Look under published volumes for the books offered. The inventories, port and brokage books have loads of interesting material culture.

Currently the previous volumes are on discounted costs (£5 each) from the current volume (£15 indvdl) so if any are of interest it would be a good time to purchase them.

Nice find, Randall. Thanks for sharing. I loves me them probate inventories for an idea of what people owned at the carious class levels.

It sure was!

Unlike most medieval terriers this one was done almost for the sole purpose of preparing the town for defence. Every plot was divided to the person who owned it or lived there. If the ploy was big the more loops and crenels you had to protect (i.e. find more men for) the smaller less up to 1/2 a loop!

The probate inventories are great. Mostly they are tudor sadly but it is still very interesting. Some day all the Southampton Record Society will be electric copies but that requires more funds so it will not happen right away.
