15th century hose (alternatives)

Post by Whitetre »

kind of a (another anyhow) random question....

I cant seem to find (and maybe I am looking in the wrong places) any alternatives to hose, for my 15th century persona.

now, I understand that obviously all the hot medieval babes would love to see me trouncing around showing off my large bulbous buttocks and ENOURMOUS sense of denial, but I was wondering if there are any other options....

Firstly you should usually be wearing a coat in the 15th century when wearing hose so your butt and groin should be covered except in a few odd fashions except when doing physical labor.
And remember that 15th century hosen are like tight fitting sweat pants. In fact if your going to use a strech cotton you might as well use sweat pants or that kind of knit fleece or whatever it is called. The number one difference is the ankle. sweat pants have an elastic band that creates a bunch at the ankle. Hosen follow the shape of the leg all the way down.

There basically is no alternative unless you want to be a muck farmer.

If you are a big guy, wear a long gown. If you are worried about heat, have the hosen, gown and your doublet made of a lightweight wool. And always wear a linen shirt.

Have to agree with Piers Brent and Jeff J; hose and a gown are the fashion. Walking around in hose and a doublet or hose and a pourpoint is a reenactoism. Only time you ever see men without a gown is during labor jobs and even then many high class workers like stone masions are often shown still wearing a gown.

As Jeff mentioned make a gown out of light wool for hot weather.

What about late 15th century landsknechts?

Of course that is kind of a different discussion. ;)

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

When you hit the mid-late 90s might as well call it turn of the century ;)

If you don't like it,
Move to Russia !!!

Seriously - as a 15th century Russian can wear those huge baloon pants. Forget noticing your butt -- they won't be able to find it if they go looking!

Or a Prussian or a Pole. Mostly German, but you also get the polish, Russian, and some eastern styles.

So I wear the pantaloons style pants.

At least thats my story and I'm sticking too it.
